Das Projekt entstand, als Dr. Paula David, eine Sozialarbeiterin in einem j\u00fcdischen Altenheim in Toronto, in den 1990er Jahren ein Programm f\u00fcr poetisches Schreiben ins Leben rief, um 15 Holocaust-\u00dcberlebenden Frauen zu helfen, mit den langfristigen Traumata umzugehen, die durch schreckliche Verbrechen wie sexuelle Gewalt, Menschenversuche und Zwangssterilisation entstanden waren. Drei der Lieder auf diesem Album stammen aus diesen Gedichten, die 1995 ver\u00f6ffentlicht wurden.<\/p>\n<p>F\u00fcnf andere Lieder basieren auf Molly Applebaums Tagebuch und Memoiren, die 2017 unter dem Titel <em>Buried Words<\/em> [Versch\u00fcttete Worte] ver\u00f6ffentlicht wurden. Molly Applebaum wurde am 27. Oktober 1930 in Krakau geboren. Als Deutschland 1939 in Polen einmarschierte, konnte Molly nicht mehr zur Schule gehen. 1941 wurden die Juden zusammengetrieben und in Todeslager geschickt, darunter auch das Lager Belzec. Mollys Mutter Sara Weissenberg sorgte daraufhin daf\u00fcr, dass Molly und ihre \u00e4ltere Cousine Helen sich bei einem Bauern namens Victor in Dombrowa, Polen, verstecken konnten. Aus Angst, dass seine Nachbarn herausfinden k\u00f6nnten, dass er Juden beherbergte (ein Vergehen, auf das die Todesstrafe steht), weigerte sich der Bauer, Mollys j\u00fcngeren Bruder Zygmunt (der nicht schweigen konnte) oder ihre Mutter Sara zu verstecken. Beide wurden von den Nazis ermordet. Der Bauer begrub Molly und ihre Cousine in einer kleinen Holzkiste in der Scheune, die so eng war, dass sie sich nicht setzen konnten, und nur ein kleines Loch zum Atmen hatte. Olga Avigail Mieleszczuk, Absolventin der Warschauer Chopin-Musikuniversit\u00e4t, sagte: &#8222;In der Zwischenkriegszeit (1918-1939) wurde Warschau zur europ\u00e4ischen Hauptstadt des Tangos und zur Welthauptstadt des jiddischen Tangos (&#8230;) In der Zwischenkriegszeit wurden in Polen mehr als 3.000 Tangos geschrieben. Viele wurden zu Hits, und die meisten wurden von polnischen Juden geschrieben und komponiert&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Die Musik auf der CD wurde teilweise von Rebekah Wolkstein komponiert und teilweise aus dem Werk von Komponisten entnommen, die wie Artur Gold in den Lagern get\u00f6tet wurden.
