At the time when the divine cult was held in the Temple of Jerusalem, the Levites were in charge of the musical and vocal accompaniment. They sang canticles during the ceremonies.



Since the destruction of the Temple, the divine service "moved" to the synagogue.
The daily prayers and the ones of holidays are recited under the leading of the cantor - assistant to the congregation, in its various exiles.
