Daphné Kritharas

New album by the singer Daphné Kritharas, compiling 12 songs in Greek and Judeo-Spanish from the Aegean Sea. Available in the EIJM’s online shop.

Born in Paris in 1992 from a Greek father and a French mother, Dafné Kritharas gets her inspiration at the crossroads of the East and West. She grew up hearing Judeo-Spanish songs that her cousin sang, the cellist Bahia El Bacha. To sing to express the intimate became very early for her an evidence. She sings in Greek and Judeo-Spanish, but also in French, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish and Turkish, through her travels and discoveries with her partner, the guitarist, author and composer Paul Barreyre.

The album Djoyas de Mar, published in 2018 at Lior Editions, comprise twelve tracks, seven in Greek and five in Judeo-Spanish. These songs are linked to the exile and uprooting. The arrangement are made by Camille El Bacha, pianist, improvisator and composer. He develops today his musical world with Jean-François Zygel at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris (CNSMDP). Naghib Shanbehzadeh, young genius of Eastern percussions, founding member with his father Saied of the Shanbehzadeh ensemble, brought to this CD his personal touch.
