KZ Musik: Encyclopedia of music composed in concentration camps 1933 - 1945

Collection directed by Francesco Lotoro

Published in 2011, this 24 CD boxset gathers overs 500 pieces of music composed in concentration camps.

Operas, symphonies, chamber music, Lieder, choral music, cabaret, jazz, traditional and popular music... As much varied musical genres recorded by contemporary musicians, under the direction of the Italian pianist, composer and musicologist Francesco Lotoro.

These compositions were written between 1933 and 1945 by Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, politic opponents, handicapped, people with different profiles, who were deported, killed, or who survived the death camps.

The fruit of a musicological research that lasted 22 years, this encyclopedia, directed by Francesco Lotoro, and produced by the music label Muzikstrasse, is a world reference for music written during the Holocaust.

Each CD include a booklet in English and in Italian, comprising biographies of the composers, photographs, notes concerning the music, the names of the camps in which the pieces were composed, and lyrics in the original language.

A 25th booklet, also in Italian and in English, presents each concentration camp, from Auschwitz to Fullen (Germany), passing by the Italian camp of Giado in Libya, or the Japanese camp of Changi in Singapour. A short biography of the musicians who participated in the recording of this boxset completes this booklet.

This encyclopedia, a major reference for music composed in the camps, was given to the EIJM by the Association "Janusz Korczak Jeunesse". May they be thanked.
