Jewish Music: When Singular is Plural

A lecture by Hervé Roten, Director of the European Institute of Jewish Music, at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, in the framework of the session Art as/in Dialogue: Jewish and Christian Music

Wednesday November 6, 2019, 6 pm a lecture by Hervé Roten, Director of the European Institute of Jewish Music, at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (ITALY), in the framework of the session Art as/in Dialogue: Jewish and Christian Music

The Cardinal Bea Center is the Institute of Jewish Studies and Judo-Christian Relations of the Gregorian University, which attracts students, mostly Catholic and in preparation for the priesthood or service in the Church, from more than 120 countries of the world. The Cardinal Bea Center for Judaic Studies enjoys a special partnership with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which results into regular exchanges of students and teachers.
During this academic year 2019-2020, The Cardinal Bea Center organizes a series of three conferences on the theme of art in dialogue, including music, literature and visual arts.

It is in this context that Hervé Roten, ethnomusicologist and Director of the European Institute of Jewish Music, will give a lecture on the plural concept of Jewish music.
His counterpart will be the musicologist and theologian Philippe Charru, Head of the Department of Aesthetics Center Sèvres - Jesuit Faculties of Paris and holder of the great organ of Saint-Ignace. The latter will present a comparison of Bach’s Incarnatus est and Mozart’s, to show how the musical writing itself reflects different religious conceptions of Christianity.
This dialogue between Jewish and Christian music will be moderated by Claudio Procaccia, Director of the Department of Jewish Culture of the Jewish Community of Rome.
