RELEASE OF THE 5th CD FROM THE DISCOVERY COLLECTION
Drawing from their experience in Bulgarian singing, The Balkanes Quartet, accompanied by David Bruley (percussion) and Edmond Ghrenassia (clarinet), create a polyphonic repertoire based on traditional Judeo-Spanish songs, on which they integrated traditional Bulgarian songs showing similar modes and thematic topics.
Thus, for example, a Sephardic song that depicts a dialogue between a mother and her daughter (Hija mia), the mother beseeching her daughter who is unlucky in love to not throw herself into the sea, responds to a Bulgarian song in which a young women begs her mother not to marry her too soon (Molih ta)...
This interaction between the two musical cultures ‒ Sephardic and Bulgarian ‒ provides a renewed vision of the Judeo-Spanish singing.
