History of Hatikva, the Israeli national anthem

A radio program by the European Institute for Jewish Music hosted by Hervé Roten

MUSIQUES JUIVES D’HIER ET D’AUJOURD’HUI - MARDI 5 JUIN 2018, JUDAÏQUES FM (94.8), 21H00

In introduction to the conference HATIKVA - Lyrical Odyssey, History and origins of the Israeli national anthem organised by the EIJM as part of the Festival of Jewish Cultures, on June 13th 2018 at 6 PM in the 3rd arrondiseement townhall of Paris, Théa Herz, psychologist, academic specialised in the presentation of information, will offer us a concise version of the amazing history of the Israeli national anthem.

If the author of the lyrics of the Hatikva is known (Naftali H. Imber, born in Galicia in 1856), the origin of its melody is much more enigmatic. Often credited to the Czech composer Smetana (1824-1884) who uses it in his symphonic poem La Moldau, Théa Herz shows us, with audio examples, that this tune circulated for over 500 years.

An exciting and moving broadcast not to miss !
