Of gold and light, a musical journey through Jewish celebrations

A radio program by the European Institute for Jewish Music hosted by Hervé Roten

MUSIQUES JUIVES D’HIER ET D’AUJOURD’HUI - TUESDAY JANUARY 17TH, JUDAÏQUES FM (94.8), 21H05

Jewish music goes round the Mediterranean sea, through the Jewish calendar, from Roch Hashanah to Purim. From one style to another, from Hebrew Baroque to Judeo-Spanish romances, from lively rythms to melancolic melodies. With a great range of instruments, the Ensemble XVIII-21 Le Baroque Nomade performs this repertoire with sensitivity, with many improviations, contrasts, showing all the influences Jewish Music transports.

Since over 20 years, XVIII-21 Le Baroque Nomade, created by Jean-Christophe Frisch in 1995, stands out of the usual baroque music world with its humanist and pioneer approach. Their last CD, D’Or et de Lumière (Or vezahav), invites us to a musical journey into Mediterranean traditions, and the celebrations of Rosh Hashanah, Hosha’ana raba (last day of Sukkot), Hanoukka, Purim and Passover.

This radio broadcast with Jean Christophe Frisch, will be the occasion to talk about his carrier, in which he recorded 3 CD’s dedicated to Jewish music : Les Psaumes de David / Benedetto Marcello ; Schubert Klezmer and Or vezahav.
We will hear samples of Italian baroque Jewish cantatas and traditional Judeo-Spanish tunes in a festive interpretation…
