Survive and die with music in Nazi camps

A radio program of the French Center of Jewish Music, hosted by Hervé Roten.

MUSIQUES JUIVES D’HIER ET D’AUJOURD’HUI – TUESDAY JANUARY 17, 2012, JUDAIQUE FM, 21h05. Radio program in French

On January 2016 was held, in France and many other countries, the International Day of memory of the victims of the Holocaust, and prevention of crimes against humanity. This day matches symbolically with the liberation of Auschwitz camp by the Russian army.

The ceremonies during this day are often illustrated with music written by men and women who died during the Holocaust or survived it.
Since 20 years now, musicologists, composers and musicians got interested in this “music of the Holocaust”.

Among them, Bruno Giner who just published a few months ago a book called  “Survivre et mourir en musique dans les camps nazis” (Survive and die in music in nazi camps).

During this radio program, Bruno Giner describes to us the settings of the concentration camps. He also explains how music in the camps was a mean of propaganda for the nazis, and of resistance for the deportees.

This radio program is illustrated with many musical examples.
