With an early aptitude for music, she learned to play the piano at the age of six and took part in her kibbutz&#8217;s musical activities. After finishing high school, she postponed her military service to study music, first at the Tel Aviv Conservatory, then at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. Her teachers included Paul Ben-Haim, Frank Pelleg, Abel Ehrlich, Ilona Vinze-Kraus and Josef Tal, the latter often regarded as one of the founding fathers of Israeli music.<\/p>\n<p>In 1951, Naomi Shemer joined the Israel Defense Forces and served in the Nahal as a pianist. After being discharged from the army, she wrote songs for theater, collaborating with <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-112128 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Travel-of-Benjamin-The-Third_Lyrics-and-MMusic-by-Naomi-Shemer_D33-30_423_VIG-287x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Travel-of-Benjamin-The-Third_Lyrics-and-MMusic-by-Naomi-Shemer_D33-30_423_VIG-287x300.jpg 287w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Travel-of-Benjamin-The-Third_Lyrics-and-MMusic-by-Naomi-Shemer_D33-30_423_VIG-600x627.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Travel-of-Benjamin-The-Third_Lyrics-and-MMusic-by-Naomi-Shemer_D33-30_423_VIG.jpg 765w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>composer Yochanan Zarai on the musical <em>Pshita Bakfar<\/em>, then with actor and singer Chaim Topol. She also composes songs for the Israeli musical troupes (<em>Chamsinim Bameshlat, Hakol Biglal Masmer<\/em>) and for the Dudaim duo (<em>Kibui Orot, Shayarat Harokvim<\/em>&#8230;).<\/p>\n<p>At the end of 1960, Naomi Shemer embarked on a nine-month tour of the United States, then back in Israel, continuing to write songs for a variety of performers. In 1964, travelling to Paris with her daughter, she immersed herself in the French songs of well-known performers, on which she wrote new Hebrew lyrics, such as <em>Shilgyia<\/em> [<em>Snow White<\/em>] on the song <em>Les souliers<\/em> by Guy B\u00e9art, or <em>Ein Ahavot Smechot<\/em>, on the tune of <em>Il n&#8217;y a pas d&#8217;amour heureux<\/em> by Georges Brassens.<\/p>\n<p>In 1966, Naomi Shemer formed a women&#8217;s quartet, The Shemer Sisters <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_112100_1('footnote_plugin_reference_112100_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_112100_1('footnote_plugin_reference_112100_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_112100_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_112100_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"> Composed of Dina Golan, Dalia Oren, Amna Goldstein and Ruthy Bikal<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_112100_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_112100_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script>, to perform her songs. Unfortunately, financial difficulties led her to disband the quartet.<\/p>\n<p>In 1967, she wrote the song <em>Yerushalayim shel zahav<\/em>, which would bring her worldwide fame and prompt the commissioning of dozens of songs by renowned artists such as Chava Alberstein, Yehoram Gaon, Yossi Banai&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-112093 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Naomi-Shemer-au-piano-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Naomi-Shemer-au-piano-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Naomi-Shemer-au-piano-665x1024.jpg 665w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Naomi-Shemer-au-piano-600x924.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Naomi-Shemer-au-piano.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/>In 1983, Naomi Shemer was awarded the prestigious Israel Prize. But during the 1990s, Naomi&#8217;s health deteriorated to the point of affecting her career. In 1994, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem awarded her an honorary doctorate; Tel Aviv University followed suit in 2001. And in 2000, she became a member of the Academy of Hebrew Language.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi Shemer died of cancer on June 26, 2004. She is buried in the place of her birth, Kibbutz Kinneret, overlooking the lake she often sang about.<\/p>\n<p>During her career, she wrote and published over 200 songs. In accordance with her request, those attending her funeral &#8211; broadcast on national television &#8211; did not deliver any eulogies; three of her songs were sung instead. On her death, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon declared: &#8220;Using wonderful words and melodies, she succeeded in connecting us to our roots, to our origins, to the beginnings of Zionism.
