His parents were both amateur musicians, and his mother knew the tradition of Proven\u00e7al Jewish songs. From the age of seven, Milhaud was learning the violin and composing. In 1909, he entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied harmony with Gustave Leroux, counterpoint with Andr\u00e9 G\u00e9dalge, composition with organist Charles-Marie Widor and orchestration with Paul Dukas. There he discovered South American folklore and exotic rhythms, which were later expressed in such of his most emblematic works as <em>Saudades do Brazil<\/em> (1920-1921) and <em>Le b\u0153uf sur le toit<\/em> (1919). Back to Paris, he took part in the brief adventure of the &#8220;Groupe des Six&#8221; (Francis Poulenc, Arthur Honegger, Germaine Tailleferre, Louis Durey, Georges Auric and Darius Milhaud) created around Jean Cocteau, mainly in reaction to Impressionism and Wagnerism.<\/p>\n<p>In 1923, during a stay in the United States, he discovered jazz, whose rhythms he used in the composition of his ballet <em>La Cr\u00e9ation du monde<\/em> (1923).<\/p>\n<p>His output remained abundant until the outbreak of the Second World War, when he was forced to flee occupied France, accumulating two proscription lists: as a Jew and as a composer of degenerate art. In 1940, he left for the United States, where conductor Pierre Monteux helped him find a position as professor of composition at Mills College in Oakland, California. Milhaud&#8217;s students there included jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, variety composer Burt Bacharach, and the founders of American minimalism Steve Reich and Philip Glass.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-112687 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Couv-Service-sacre-dirige-par-Milhaud-D33-30_7_VIG-289x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Couv-Service-sacre-dirige-par-Milhaud-D33-30_7_VIG-289x300.jpg 289w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Couv-Service-sacre-dirige-par-Milhaud-D33-30_7_VIG-768x798.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Couv-Service-sacre-dirige-par-Milhaud-D33-30_7_VIG-600x623.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Couv-Service-sacre-dirige-par-Milhaud-D33-30_7_VIG.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/>In 1947, he returned to France and was offered a position as professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire. He then alternated his musical activities between Paris and the United States. His career was crowned in 1971 by an appointment to the Acad\u00e9mie des Beaux-Arts. He died in Geneva on June 22, 1974, at the age of 81.<\/p>\n<p>Author of a prolific oeuvre (443 opus numbers!), Darius Milhaud tackled every genre: opera, chamber music, symphonic music, concertos, ballets and vocal music. His musical language is marked by polytonality and polyrhythm. He drew his inspiration from jazz as well as from Brazilian, African and Proven\u00e7al Jewish music.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-112681 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Le-Candelabre-a-Sept-branches-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Le-Candelabre-a-Sept-branches-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Le-Candelabre-a-Sept-branches.jpg 324w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/>His Jewish-inspired works are mainly vocal. These include: Po\u00e8mes juifs (1916), the opera <em>Esther de Carpentras<\/em> (1925-1927), <em>Chants populaires h\u00e9bra\u00efques<\/em> (1925), <em>Pri\u00e8res journali\u00e8res \u00e0 l&#8217;usage des Juifs du Comtat Venaissin<\/em> (1927), <em>Liturgie comtadine<\/em> (1933), <em>Cantate nuptiale<\/em> (1937), <em>Couronne de gloire<\/em> (1940), <em>Ca\u00efn et Abel<\/em> (1944), <em>Borechou-Schema Israel<\/em> (1944), <em>Kaddish<\/em> (1945), <em>Service sacr\u00e9 pour le samedi matin<\/em> (1947), <em>Lekha dodi<\/em> (1948), <em>Cantate des Proverbes<\/em> (1951), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/le-candelabre-a-sept-branches-1951-de-darius-milhaud\/\"><em>Le Cand\u00e9labre \u00e0 sept branches<\/em><\/a> (1951), the oratorio <em>David<\/em> composed in 1952-1953 for the third millennium of Jerusalem in 1954, <em>Le Dibbouk<\/em> (1963), <em>Chants h\u00e9bra\u00efques suivant le rite des Communaut\u00e9s Israelites de l&#8217;ancien Comtat Venaissin<\/em> (1973) and finally one of his last works, the cantata <em>Ani Maamin<\/em> (1972) on a text by Elie Wiesel, which relates the horrors committed at Auschwitz. Treblinka, Maidanek&#8230; places where more than twenty of the composer&#8217;s cousins perished.<\/p>\n<p>Some of Darius Milhaud&#8217;s Jewish works are inspired by liturgical themes from his native Comtat Venaissin. This is particularly true of his <em>Etude sur des th\u00e8mes liturgiques du Comtat Venaissin<\/em>, which includes the traditional aria of the L\u00e9&#8217;ha dodi prayer noted on p. 124 of the collection <em>Chants h\u00e9bra\u00efques suivant le rite des Communaut\u00e9s Israelites de l&#8217;ancien Comtat Venaissin<\/em> by Jules Salomon and Mardoch\u00e9e Cr\u00e9mieu (1885).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ex audio 1 : L\u00e9\u2019ha dodi &#8211;
