{"id":13123,"date":"2017-02-14T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T14:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/2017\/02\/16\/sauvee-des-cendres-saved-from-the-ashes\/"},"modified":"2025-11-02T19:55:40","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T18:55:40","slug":"sauvee-des-cendres-saved-from-the-ashes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/sauvee-des-cendres-saved-from-the-ashes\/","title":{"rendered":"Sauv\u00e9e des cendres (saved from the ashes)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The musician <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@heliosazoulay8884\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H\u00e9lios Azoulay<\/a>, expert and reknowned performer of the music in the concentration camps, just released a CD called <em>Sauv\u00e9e des cendres (saved from the ashes)<\/em>, refeering to an unfinished opera by Viktor Ullmann (1898-1944). On October 17th 1944, the Austrian composer is killed in Auschwitz. He had just finished writing the libretto of an opera dedicated to Jeanne d\u2019Arc: <em>Le 30 mai 1431<\/em>. Written in the ghetto of Terezin, this opera depicts the famous moments of Jeanne d\u2019Arc\u2019s life until her death on the pyre. This unreleased work has been recovered, translated and published for the first time by the composer H\u00e9lios Azoulay in his book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/lenfer-aussi-a-son-orchestre-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L\u2019enfer aussi a son orchestre (hell also has its orchestra).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although Ullmann\u2019s libretto is a poetic chef-d\u2019oeuvre, it has unfortunately no music: he scribbled only two pages for piano, included in another musical score: <em>Don Quixote tanzt Fandango<\/em> (1944). H\u00e9lios Azoulay decides therefore to complete this opera dedicated to Jeanne d\u2019Arc, who is often compared to Deborah the Prophetess, who died burnt on the pyre for trying to save her people. But he did not want to compose in Ullmann\u2019s style. He spreads and transforms the few precious notes already written in a sort of melodic ostinato which upholds the text. Because he doesn\u2019t want to compose an opera, the text is more important and must be heard! This creation is therefore written for a reciter, a woman\u2019s voice, a string quartet and a piano.<br \/>The result is captivating. The music is like hanging on the singer\u2019s lips, Marielle Rubens.<\/p>\n<p>This CD includes four other musical works :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Shtiler Shtiler<\/em> was written by Aleksander Volkoviski in the Vilna\u2019s ghetto in 1943. This young boy, an 11 year old remarkable pianist, wins a music contest organized by the Jewish Council of Vilna\u2019s Ghetto by writing this cradle song, which quickly becomes one of the favorite songs of the ghetto\u2026 before its liquidation in 1943.<\/li>\n<li><em>Und der Regen rinnt<\/em> is a nursery rhyme written by Ilse Weber, the chief nurse of the children quarter in Terezin camp. She often grabbed her guitar and sang these cradle songs for the children, like a cuddle. But this song is for her own son, Hanu\u0161&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><em>La r\u00eaverie de Mengele<\/em> <em>(Mengele\u2019s daydream)<\/em> is inspired by a true episode. In Auschwitz, the Hauptsturmf\u00fchrer Mengele, who performs atrocious medical experiments which leads to the death of thousands of children and grown-ups, asks Alma Ros\u00e9, who leads the women\u2019s orchestra of the camps, to perform <em>La R\u00eaverie<\/em> by Robert Schumann. The absolute obscenity of this choice inspired H\u00e9lios Azoulay to write a piece that blends the softness of the original work with the horror of the concentration camps.<\/li>\n<li><em>Kolysanka dla synka w krematorium<\/em> tells the story of Aaron Liebeskind, a young Polish clockmaker, who sees the murder of his wife, Edith and his son in the extermination camp of Treblinka in 1942. He begs the crematoria\u2019s guard to let him oversee his son during the night. While the unbearable smell of grilled corpses is in the air, Aaron rocks his three year old dead son, in his arms, singing to him this cradle song\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.fr\/H%C3%A9lios-Azoulay-lEnsemble-Musique-Incidentale\/dp\/B01N7P4YPE\/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1486736073&amp;sr=8-4&amp;keywords=h%C3%A9lios+azoulay\">Order the
