{"id":131949,"date":"2026-04-26T13:17:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T11:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/jewish-baroque-music\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T12:15:01","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T10:15:01","slug":"jewish-baroque-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/jewish-baroque-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Jewish Baroque Music"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Concerto classic, 2008 \/ Music.media, 2009<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Recorded in 2008 by the Salomone Rossi Ensemble, this CD features a collection of iconic works from the tradition of Jewish Baroque music, first developed in Italy in the 17th century and continued in Amsterdam during the 18th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Baroque Jewish Music: A Brief Overview<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In northern Italy, the Court of the Gonzagas of Mantua welcomed many Jewish musicians during the 16th and 17th centuries. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/rossi-salomone-vers-1570-vers-1630\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Salamone Rossi (ca 1570 \u2013 ca 1630)<\/a>, undoubtedly the most famous among them, worked there until 1612 alongside Claudio Monteverdi (1567\u20131643). In 1622\u201323, under the influence of the reformist rabbi Leon of Modena, Salamone Rossi published an important collection in Venice\u2014titled <em>Ha-Shirim asher li-Shelomo<\/em> (The Canticles of Solomon)\u2014containing 33 choral pieces for 3 to 8 voices intended for synagogue worship and written in the Italian style of the time. This CD features three of these choral works (<em>En Keloh\u00e8nu, Shir hamaalot, Mizmor le Toda<\/em>) interspersed with instrumental pieces by Rossi. Also in Italy, the non-Jewish composer Carlo Grossi (1634\u20131688) wrote a <em>Cantata ebraica in dialogo<\/em> in 1680 (or 1681) for a Jewish brotherhood in Modena or Venice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This trend of Jewish assimilation into the surrounding classical music scene was also evident in Amsterdam, where, in the 18th century, wealthy Portuguese Jewish families hosted concerts of operas and cantatas in their salons, genres that even found their way into the synagogue through the works of Abraham Caceres (notably <em>Hiski Hizki<\/em> and the cantata <em>Le-el Elim<\/em> of 1738) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/lidarti-cristiano-giuseppe-1730-apres-1793\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cristiano Giuseppe Lidarti (1730-apr\u00e8s 1793)<\/a>. The latter composed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/ester-un-oratorio-de-pourim-du-compositeur-lidarti-1730-ap-1793\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oratorio Ester<\/a> in 1774, the longest work in the entire history of Baroque Jewish music (over two hours). The libretto for the oratorio <em>Ester <\/em>was written by the rabbi of Mantua and Venice, Jacob Raphael Saraval (1707?\u20131782), known for his interest in music. In a document dated March 1757, Saraval asked the authorities of the Mantua ghetto, a few days before Purim, for permission for the students of his <em>Yeshiva <\/em>to present \u201ca sort of opera based on a biblical story.\u201d He obtained permission on the condition that no non-Jews be admitted to the performance, except for the instrumentalist and the costume designer. Saraval\u2019s libretto is based on the text of the second version of Handel\u2019s oratorio <em>Esther <\/em>(1732), but with many cuts and a few additions. This dazzling CD references the oratorio by including two excerpts from it.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Salomone Rossi Ensemble<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in 1991 by violinist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lydiacevidalli.it\/en\/biography-of-lydia-cevidalli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lydia Cevidalli<\/a>, the Salomone Rossi Ensemble features on this CD: Caterina Trogu Roehrich, soprano; Renata Stefani, mezzo-soprano; Luigi Pagliarini, tenor; Davide Benetti, bass; Lydia Cevidalli and Elena Marazzi, violins; Fabio Bellofiore and Eugenio Silvestri, violas; Claudio Frigerio, cello; and Simonetta Heger, harpsichord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a
