{"id":41849,"date":"2020-02-26T11:04:35","date_gmt":"2020-02-26T10:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/fonds-leon-algazi\/"},"modified":"2021-09-01T10:51:45","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T08:51:45","slug":"fonds-leon-algazi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/fonds-leon-algazi\/","title":{"rendered":"THE L\u00c9ON ALGAZI COLLECTION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Deposited at the Yuval organisation in the 1990\u2019s, then at the EIJM between 2007 and 2020, the L\u00e9on Algazi\u2019s holding gathers around 600 documents (sheet music, audio files, films, photographies and other various archives) coming mainly from the Algazi family and from the archives of the Grande synagogue de la Victoire.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Born in Epuresti (Romania) on February 6, 1890, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/algazi-leon-1890-1971\/\">L\u00e9on Algazi<\/a><\/strong> showed a disposition for music at a very early age. After a brief stay in Jerusalem in 1905, he followed theological courses at the S\u00e9minaire Isra\u00e9lite de France in 1908, where he obtained his rabbinical diploma in 1922. At the same time, he continued to study with masters such as Arnold Sch\u00f6nberg and Hans Eisler in Vienna, Andr\u00e9 G\u00e9dalge, Raoul Laparra and Charles Koechlin in Paris. A passionnate student of folklore (he was in contact with his Romanian compatriot, the ethnomusicologist Constantin Br\u0103iloiu\u00a0; he was also close to Abraham Zvi Idelsohn, the father of Jewish musicology), Algazi published in 1925\u00a0<em>Trois chansons populaires juives<\/em> French lyrics by Edmond Fleg (Max Eschig et Cie, Paris).<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright  wp-image-27181\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/1._i_179_leon_algazi_a_la_fenetre_du_journal_luptatorul_bucarest_1920_recadree_lumiere_300px_larg.jpg\" alt=\"1._i_179_leon_algazi_a_la_fenetre_du_journal_luptatorul_bucarest_1920_recadree_lumiere_300px_larg.jpg\" width=\"254\" height=\"169\" align=\"right\" \/> In 1929, he created the weekly radio program\u00a0<em>The Voice of Israel<\/em>, and at the beginning of the 1930\u2019s he co-founded with Vladimir Dyck the collection of Hebrew music\u00a0<em>Mizmor<\/em>\u00a0in the Salabert publishing house. In 1936 or 1937, he became the choral conductor of the\u00a0<em>Grande Synagogue de la Victoire<\/em> in Paris. And between 1936 and 1940, he taught Hebraic singing at the Schola Cantorum.<\/p>\n<p>President of the National Syndicate of conductors for religious music, professor and director of the Israelite School of Pedagogy and Liturgy of the\u00a0<em>S\u00e9minaire Isra\u00e9lite de France<\/em>, music director of Consistorial Temples, L\u00e9on Algazi was also one of the co-founders of the Symposium of Jewish Intellectuals of France created in 1957.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft  wp-image-27183\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/2._i_137_leon_algazi_1933_300px_vertic.jpg\" alt=\"2._i_137_leon_algazi_1933_300px_vertic.jpg\" width=\"218\" height=\"323\" align=\"left\" \/>The 600 archives from the Algazi\u2019s holding gives us an overview of this man and his work unfairly lost in oblivion. It counts 255 documents from his family, among which over 70 rare books from his library (Gerson-Levy,\u00a0<em>Orgue et pioutim<\/em>, 1859 ; Br\u0103iloiu Constantin,\u00a0<em>Esquisse d\u2019une m\u00e9thode de folklore musical<\/em>, dedicated by the author to L\u00e9on Algazi, 1935 ; Ausubel Nathan,\u00a0<em>A Treasury of Jewish Folklore<\/em>, 1948\u2026), 50 printed and manuscript music scores, 24 audio cassettes and magnetic tapes (Chants d\u2019Isra\u00ebl in honor of the 10th anniversary of the State of Israel, Concert of Jewish music, songs in Hebrew and Judeo-Spanish, Choir of the Grande Synagogue de Paris, radio broadcasts\u00a0<em>The Voice of Israel<\/em>\u2026), 4 family movies, 57 photographies and 73 various archives (mails, concert programs, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The collection from the Grande synagogue de la Victoire gathers also around 200 documents, mainly sheet music written or arranged by L\u00e9on Algazi.<\/p>\n<p><img
