{"id":42390,"date":"2018-10-03T16:16:21","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T14:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/fonds-halphen\/"},"modified":"2021-07-22T16:11:52","modified_gmt":"2021-07-22T14:11:52","slug":"fonds-halphen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/fonds-halphen\/","title":{"rendered":"THE HALPHEN COLLECTION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Born in 1872 and killed on duty for France in 1917, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/halphen-fernand-1872-1917\/\">Fernand Halphen<\/a>, pupil of Gabriel Faur\u00e9 and Jules Massenet, obtained the second Rome award in 1896 and wrote during his short life around a hundred music pieces.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 182px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/i_25_vig_alice_halphen.jpg\" alt=\"i_25_vig_alice_halphen.jpg\" width=\"182\" height=\"271\" align=\"right\" data-description=\"&quot;&lt;strong\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alice Halphen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>His wife,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/halphen-alice-1878-1963\/\">Alice Halphen<\/a>, born Koenigswarter (1878- 1963), was an art lover, and held a music salon in her private mansion on Dumont-d\u2019Urville street during several decades, where many artists used to come, and who she often helped: among them Daniel-Lesur, Ania Dorfman, Enesco, Faur\u00e9, Gedalge, Monique Haas, Honegger, Jolivet, Mihailovitz, Milhaud, Messiaen and Poulenc. Marked in her youth by the Dreyfus Affair, Alice Halphen was interested during all her life in the question of Judaism and played an important role in the Jewish community of France.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-21063\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/hagoseida_p_426_002.jpg\" alt=\"hagoseida_p_426_002.jpg\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The European Institute of Jewish Music houses in its collections over 1.000 documents of a priceless value that belonged to Alice and Fernand Halphen : mail with the greatest composers of the time (Faur\u00e9, Massenet, Hahn, B\u00fcsser, Cortot, Koechlin, Risler\u2026), musical manuscripts, among them several autographs, printed scores, photographies, press clips&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>A part of this collection \u2013 in particular the music scores &#8211; was given by the great grandchildren of Alice and Fernand Halphen, Isabelle Friedman, Odile Haye and Nathalie Bardon in 2005. Afterwards, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondationjudaisme.org\/\">Fondation du Juda\u00efsme Fran\u00e7ais<\/a>, the association\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/yuval-association\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yuval<\/a>\u00a0and the European Institute of Jewish Music contributed to sthrenghten this collection by buying many other documents &#8211; in particular mail &#8211; during auctions (2006, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2016).<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/i_320_vig_photo_chateau_la_chapelle_en_s.jpg\" alt=\"i_320_vig_photo_chateau_la_chapelle_en_s.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" align=\"right\" data-description=\"&quot;&lt;strong\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Castle of La Chapelle-en-Serval<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Let\u2019s note that during World War II, the nazis took possession of the musical library of Fernand Halphen and that the family castle of La Chapelle-en-Serval was looted several times. After the war, Alice Halphen recovered unfortunately only a part of what had been robbed.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/fernand-halphen\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-21067\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cp_pmjf_5.jpg\" alt=\"cp_pmjf_5.jpg\" width=\"198\" height=\"170\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>Since the release of the double CD\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/fernand-halphen\/\">Fernand Halphen. Melodies for piano and chamber music<\/a>\u00a0(2006) and the CD\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/musique-francaise-avant-et-apres-la-grande-guerre\/\">French Music Before And After The Great War<\/a>\u00a0(2017) in which was performed his 1st symphony, the public rediscovered the work of Fernand Halphen, a beautiful classical music composer.<\/p>\n<p>The centenary of World War I was also the occasion to exhibit documents that belonged to Fernand Halphen, killed on duty for France in 1917, and to perform his works worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2015, the EIJM Editions started publishing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/products-categories\/sheet-music-en\/composers-en\/halphen-fernand-en-2\/\">music scores of Fernand Halphen<\/a>. A hard and long work, Halphen being the author of a catalogue of 166 pieces, among them 76 melodies for voice and piano.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/du-salon-au-front-fernand-halphen-1872-1917-compositeur-mecene-et-chef-de-musique-militaire\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright  wp-image-21069\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/vignette_livre_du_salon.jpg\" alt=\"vignette_livre_du_salon.jpg\" width=\"167\" height=\"254\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Finally, let\u2019s note the publication of a collective work\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/du-salon-au-front-fernand-halphen-1872-1917-compositeur-mecene-et-chef-de-musique-militaire\/\">Du salon au front : Fernand Halphen (1872-1917), composer, patron and director of military music<\/a>\u00a0published in April 2017, under the direction of Laure Schnapper, with the collaboration of Pierre-Andr\u00e9 Meyer \u2013 Preface by Herv\u00e9 Roten, in the
