{"id":53510,"date":"2018-02-12T17:38:23","date_gmt":"2018-02-12T16:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/toscano-paul\/"},"modified":"2025-09-08T16:38:47","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T14:38:47","slug":"toscano-paul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/toscano-paul\/","title":{"rendered":"Toscano, Paul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Paul Toscano was a gypsy violinist and conductor, known in France and Europe in the second half of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n<p>We know relatively little about the artist, except that at the time, he was in great demand for the animation of Jewish weddings.<br \/>At the end of the Second World War, while gypsy music was still very present in Parisian cabarets, Toscano was one of the pillars, alongside other musicians such as Yoska Nemeth or Mirko Layosh. Among the cabarets that Paul Toscano performed in were the\u00a0<em>Dianarzade<\/em>\u00a0between 1951 and 1952, and the\u00a0<em>Rasputin<\/em>, in which he directed the gypsy orchestra.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-13971\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ls_toscano_500px.jpg\" alt=\"ls_toscano_500px.jpg\" width=\"252\" height=\"249\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ls_toscano_500px.jpg 252w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ls_toscano_500px-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/>The phonographs was still in its infancy, and there were few recorded\u00a0testimonials to his music. However, we note the recording of some titles under the label Elesdisc, in the late 40s label created by Leon Speiser in his Yiddish bookstore, 34 rue des Rosiers, Paris 4th arrondissement.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the forties, he won the first prize for &#8220;genre music&#8221;, a category rewarding works on the 78 RPM discs around the 1930s, and being performed by small, typical orchestras.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Paul Toscano appeared for the first time in the cinema, in 1947, in the film\u00a0<em>Quai des Orf\u00e8vres<\/em>\u00a0by Henri-Georges Clouzot.
