One of her most famous songs is called &#8220;Bab-el-Oued&#8221; (1948), dedicated to the Israeli soldiers who were killed during the war of independance.<\/p>\n<p>Yaffa Yarkoni was the oldest child in a family of three children. Her parents, Avraham Abramov and Malka Alkhassov were Caucasian Jews who emigrated in Palestine at the beginning of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>She spent her childhood in Tel Aviv and Givat Rambam (today\u2019s neighborhood called Givatayim), and began her artistic carreer in a small caf\u00e9 called \u00ab Tzlil \u00bb, and performed with her sister Tikva and her brother Binyamin in a popular trio called \u00ab Bamati \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Following the advice of the singer Shmuel Fischer, Yaffa joined a ballet troupe led by Gertrud Kraus, one of the dancing pioneers in Israel, and stayed about ten years.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26836 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/doc_1_yarkoni.jpg\" alt=\"doc_1_yarkoni.jpg\" width=\"287\" height=\"291\" align=\"middle\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/doc_1_yarkoni.jpg 493w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/doc_1_yarkoni-296x300.jpg 296w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/doc_1_yarkoni-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/><\/strong>On September 21, 1944, she married Yossef Gustin, who left to go to war as a volunteer of the Jewish Brigade Group of the British Army on the day following their wedding. Gustin died on March 29, 1945 in the fight against the Germans on the river Senio, in Italy. The song <em>Ouri<\/em>, with lyrics written by Rafael Klatchkin and music by Issakhar Meron, was created in his memory.<\/p>\n<p>In 1948, Yaffa married Shaike Yarkoni (who passed away in 1983), commander in the Hagana, and one of the founders of the Israeli Defence Forces. They had three daughters together.<\/p>\n<p>She then joined the musical troupe \u00ab Khichtron \u00bb of Tsahal affiliated to the Givati brigade.\u00a0<em>Bab el-Wad<\/em>, a song that she performed at the time, had become a hit, that is sung each year during Memorial Day (Yom ha-zikaron). After the war, she performed songs for the radio station\u00a0<strong>Kol Yisrael<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of Yaffa Yarkoni\u2019s songs were written by\u00a0<strong>Tuli Reviv<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Haim Hefer<\/strong>. She also performed some of the first songs for children by\u00a0<strong>Naomi Shemer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26838 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/doc_2_yarkoni.jpg\" alt=\"doc_2_yarkoni.jpg\" width=\"302\" height=\"316\" align=\"middle\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/doc_2_yarkoni.jpg 478w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/doc_2_yarkoni-287x300.jpg 287w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During a break in the Independance war, Yarkoni recorded a first disc in the studio\u00a0Radio Doctor, which is acclaimed by the public, especially the Romanian song\u00a0<em>Eynayim yeroukot<\/em>, considered today as the first pop song in Israel. After that, she signed with the new music label\u00a0Hed Artzi\u00a0that released all of her albums.<br \/>\nThe album\u00a0<em>Bab el Wad<\/em>\u00a0gathers songs of the Independance war, such as\u00a0<em>Haamini yom yavo<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Rabota\u00ef Hahistoria khozeret<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Hafindjan<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Khen efschar<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Doudou<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Yatzanu at\u00a0<\/em>that the audience thought of being Yaffa Yarkoni\u2019s creations, even though many of them were performed before by the \u00ab Tchizbatron \u00bb troupe.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1950-1960\u2019s, Yaffa Yarkoni became the n\u00b01 singer in Israel, especially with songs broadcast on the radio, which praised the state of Israel (<em>Baarvot Hanegev<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Hasavta baNegev<\/em>\u00a0(lyrics : Avchalom Cohen, 1948)).<br \/>\nHer greatest success happened in 1951 with salon songs, waltzes and tangos, performed during balls in neighborhood caf\u00e9s.<br \/>\nIn 1959 was released the album\u00a0<em>Nirkoda im Yaffa Yarkoni<\/em>, which gathered songs, such as\u00a0<em>Habibi<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Artzenu haktantonet<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Skharkhoret<\/em>. The yellow press often spoke of an imaginary rivaliry between her and the other great singer of the time,\u00a0<strong>Shoshana Damari<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26840 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/doc_3_yarkoni.jpg\" alt=\"doc_3_yarkoni.jpg\" width=\"275\" height=\"288\" align=\"middle\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/doc_3_yarkoni.jpg 478w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/doc_3_yarkoni-287x300.jpg 287w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/>Still in the 1950\u2019s, she recorded several discs for children, of which two knew a big success :\u00a0<em>Chirey yeladim kevakachatkha<\/em>, with the songs\u00a0<em>Agala im soussa<\/em>\u00a0(recorded first in 1948) and\u00a0<em>Doubon Yambo<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>Youmbo<\/em>\u00a0written by Yekhiel Mohar, and the album\u00a0<em>Chirim miKineret<\/em>\u00a0(1957) with songs by Naomi Shemer, composer and poet of Kvoutzat Kinneret (a kibbutz in Galileo), which was then beginning in the musical world.<br \/>\nYaffa Yarkoni recorded then another disc for children, with the hit song\u00a0<em>Abba cheli<\/em>\u00a0with lyrics by Talma Eligon.<\/p>\n<p>She passed away on January 1, 2012, at the Re\u2019out hospital in Tel Aviv, from Alzheimer\u2019s disease.
