Her father was a Russian from Odessa and her mother was a Pole from Wo\u0142o\u017cyn. As a young girl, Rika Zara\u00ef was serious, in her general studies and\u00a0musical studies. At the age of 7, she took piano lessons, and revealed herself quite talented. At the age of 17, she got her high school diploma, and a first prize of piano at the music conservatory of Jerusalem. Right after that, she did her military service, and was charged to lead a musical comedy,\u00a0<em>Cinq sur cinq<\/em>, which received great success among the soldiers, to such an extent that the director of one of the most important theatres of Jerusalem decided to put it on stage. On the audition day, the singer, who held the main role, was in mission, and Rika replaced her, beginning thus her singing career at the age of 19. Just after, she got married, in 1958, with the lyricist of the show, Johanan Zara\u00ef, whith whom she had a daughter, Ya\u00ebl, in 1959.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30419 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/1._disque_rika_jeune_fond_rouge.jpg\" alt=\"1._disque_rika_jeune_fond_rouge.jpg\" width=\"198\" height=\"200\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/1._disque_rika_jeune_fond_rouge.jpg 248w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/1._disque_rika_jeune_fond_rouge-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/>After the army, Rika Zara\u00ef performed in cafe-theatres, singing French songs written by Trenet, Gr\u00e9co, Aznavour and Brassens, but translated in Hebrew. She was then noticed by an impresario who suggested to her to go to France and to present herself to the director of the French concert hall l\u2019Olympia, Bruno Coquatrix. The latter told her to come back when she would have mastered the French language. Rika Zara\u00ef, who separated of her husband, lived then difficult moments, raising her child alone. She sang in cabarets, in particular the Caroll\u2019s and the Villa d\u2019Este, during two years and a half. Her career really began when she met the producer Eddie Barclay, with whom she signed in 1960, on the music label Bel Air, songs like\u00a0<em>L\u2019olivier<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>Hava Naguila<\/em>, which started to be broadcasted on the radio. She also sang in French classics from the Israeli repertoire, such as\u00a0<em>Yerushalayim shel zahav<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Halleluyah<\/em>\u00a0(Grand Prize Eurovision 1979).<\/p>\n<p>In October 1960, Rika Zara\u00ef performed in the concert hall Bobino, as a first part before Marcel Amont. In 1961, Bruno Coquatrix, faithful to what he said, hired her for a first part before Jacques Brel in l\u2019Olympia. During this event, she met Jean-Pierre Magnier, one of Brel\u2019s musicians, who would become her husband. In 1963, she performed again with Jacques Brel in Bobino, and the famous band Les Chaussettes noires in l\u2019Olympia. On the same year, she recorded\u00a0<em>Tournez man\u00e8ges<\/em>, and is filmed by Claude Lelouch in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scopitone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">un Scopitone<\/a>. In 1964, she created two songs (<em>Le temps<\/em>\u00a0;\u00a0<em>Et pourtant<\/em>) written for her by Charles Aznavour. In 1965, she did a big concert tour with Gilbert B\u00e9caud. On the same year, she left Eddie Barclay\u2019s musical label and signed with Philips, where she recorded the music of the song\u00a0<em>Prague<\/em>. It\u2019s in 1969 that she released her first great hits, such as\u00a0<em>Casatschok<\/em>, an adaptation of the Russian song\u00a0<em>Katioucha<\/em>, followed by other tarcks such as\u00a0<em>Sans chemise, sans pantalon<\/em>\u00a0;\u00a0<em>Alors je chante<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30421 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/2._hava_naguila.jpg\" alt=\"2._hava_naguila.jpg\" width=\"201\" height=\"200\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/2._hava_naguila.jpg 251w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/2._hava_naguila-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/2._hava_naguila-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 1969, Rika Zara\u00ef was victim of a serious car accident. The doctors thought she would never walk again. But thanks to her determination and patience, and the help of her friend Raymond Dextreit, supporter of natural medicine, she could walk again three years after. During her hard recovery, she composed the song\u00a0<em>Balapapa<\/em>, with joyous lyrics, which would be successful. After her recovery, she recorded new hits such as\u00a0<em>Tante Agathe<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Ma Poup\u00e9e de France<\/em>, or\u00a0<em>Sans chemise, sans pantalon<\/em>, and performed several times on stage in l\u2019Olympia. She received several Golden Discs.<\/p>\n<p>In 1983, Rika Zara\u00ef released a last album with Philipps,\u00a0<em>Tout va tr\u00e8s bien<\/em>, and stopped her artistic activities. She then started promoting medicine with plants by publishing a series of books, among which several such as\u00a0<em>Ma m\u00e9decine naturelle<\/em> (Editions Carr\u00e8re\/Michel Lafon, 1985), were successful in library (over 2.500.000 books sold in France !). But her entry in the world of natural medicine was objected by the Council of pharmacists. The affair was at the time largely discussed in the media.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30423 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/2bis._rika_zarai.jpg\" alt=\"2bis._rika_zarai.jpg\" width=\"230\" height=\"200\" align=\"right\" \/>In 1985, she came back to singing, released a new album,\u00a0<em>Sans rancune et sans regret<\/em>, and performed in l\u2019Olympia from the 22nd to the 25th of May 1986. From 1987 to 1990, she was regurlarly invited on TV and radio broadcasts.<\/p>\n<p>After twelve years of musical silence, Rika came back in 2000 with a new CD\u00a0<em>Hava<\/em>\u00a0comprising new songs such as\u00a0<em>Ce si\u00e8cle au coeur bris\u00e9<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Si j\u2019\u00e9tais orientale<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Hopa<\/em>\u00a0and covers such as\u00a0<em>Le temps des fleurs<\/em>\u00a0in tribute to her friend Dalida ;\u00a0<em>La yiddishe mama<\/em>\u00a0for her mother and the famous\u00a0<em>Hava naguila<\/em>\u00a0which became\u00a0<em>Oriental Hava<\/em>. The sound of this album is contemporary, which led Rika to perform on April 13, 2000, in the Queen, the famous nightclub on the Champs-Elys\u00e9es in Paris.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30425 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/3._rika_zarai_2007.jpg\" alt=\"3._rika_zarai_2007.jpg\" width=\"298\" height=\"200\" align=\"right\" \/>In 2006, she published her memoirs,\u00a0<em>L\u2019esp\u00e9rance a toujours raison<\/em>\u00a0(Michel Lafon). In 2007, she participated to the second year of the tour\u00a0<em>\u00c2ge Tendre et t\u00eates de bois<\/em>\u00a0all over France. Then, in 2008, she celebrated her 50 years career of singing with the release of a new album,\u00a0<em>Quand les hommes<\/em>, comprising covers by Georges Brassens and Yves Duteil, and unreleased songs.<\/p>\n<p>On June 3, 2008, Rika Zara\u00ef was admitted in a hospital in emergency for a stroke. In the middle of July, she went back home in Paris and started reeducation. A few years later, on October 3, 2013, she came back on screens in the 1 o\u2019clock TV news broadcast and in the newspaper Le Parisien for the release of a double album\u00a0<em>Anthologie 1960-1982<\/em>\u00a0on Marianne M\u00e9lodie label.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30427 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/4._rika_zarai_2019-2.jpg\" alt=\"4._rika_zarai_2019-2.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"197\" align=\"left\" \/>On December 31, 2016, Yohanan Zara\u00ef, her first husband and father of her daughter, passed away. In September 2019, the music label Marianne M\u00e9lodie released a compilation of her 100 best songs.
