{"id":90976,"date":"2022-12-10T19:07:26","date_gmt":"2022-12-10T18:07:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/les-chants-de-hanouka\/"},"modified":"2025-10-05T18:52:52","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T16:52:52","slug":"les-chants-de-hanouka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/en\/les-chants-de-hanouka\/","title":{"rendered":"The songs of Chanukah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Chanukah &#8211;<\/strong> \u05d7\u05e0\u05d5\u05db\u05d4 is the Jewish feast that commemorates the re-inauguration of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd century BC, following the victory of the Maccabees over the soldiers of the Seleucid king Antiochus Epiphanes IV.<\/p>\n<p>According to the rabbinic tradition, during this consecration, the miracle of the vial of oil occurred, allowing the Temple priests to burn for eight days a quantity of oil normally barely sufficient for only one day. This is why Chanukah is also called the &#8220;Festival of Lights&#8221; and lasts for eight days, from 25 Kislev to 2 or 3 Tevet (between the end of November and the end of December in the Gregorian calendar).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-90959 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Colorful_dreidels-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Colorful_dreidels-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Colorful_dreidels.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/>The Chanukah customs are intimately linked to the miracle of the oil vial, especially as regards the lighting of candles during the eight days of the festival and the consumption of oil-based dishes (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Potato_pancake\">latkes<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sufganiyah\">sufganiyot<\/a>&#8230;). It is also usual to play with spinning tops, each side of which is stamped with a Hebrew letter, thus reviving a game of chance that has been played throughout the East and Europe since ancient Roman times<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The candle lighting ceremony<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Several songs are specific to the candle lighting ceremony, such as:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hadlakat Hanerot &#8211; It takes its name from its opening words, &#8220;Al hanissim&#8221; (&#8220;[We thank You] for the miracles&#8221;) and is followed by a brief account of the victory of Mattathias and his
