Su padre, Yehuda-Hirsch Lifshitz, m\u00e9dico, profesor y violinista, encarnaba el ideal de una vida intelectual y art\u00edstica rica. Su madre, Batya, cantaba continuamente en casa y transmiti\u00f3 muy pronto a su hija el gusto por la m\u00fasica. Antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Nehama estudi\u00f3 en el gimnasio hebreo de Kaunas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cuando estall\u00f3 la guerra y la regi\u00f3n fue invadida por la Alemania nazi, huy\u00f3 hacia el este con sus padres y su hermana y encontr\u00f3 refugio en Uzbekist\u00e1n. Nehama Lifshitz continu\u00f3 entonces sus estudios musicales en el Conservatorio de Vilna. Dotada de una voz soprano excepcional, pronto comenz\u00f3 su carrera como solista: actu\u00f3 en la \u00f3pera de Kaunas y en 1953 se uni\u00f3 a la Orquesta Filarm\u00f3nica de Lituania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A partir de 1956, empez\u00f3 a cantar en yiddish. Esta elecci\u00f3n art\u00edstica ten\u00eda un significado especial en el contexto sovi\u00e9tico, donde la expresi\u00f3n p\u00fablica de la cultura jud\u00eda segu\u00eda estando muy limitada. En 1958, gan\u00f3 el primer premio de canto en el concurso musical de la Uni\u00f3n Sovi\u00e9tica en Mosc\u00fa. Poco a poco, Nehama Lifshitz pas\u00f3 a ser una figura emblem\u00e1tica para los jud\u00edos sovi\u00e9ticos, expresando a trav\u00e9s de la m\u00fasica su apego a su identidad y su aspiraci\u00f3n a emigrar a Israel. En su nuevo pa\u00eds, continu\u00f3 con su actividad art\u00edstica y contribuy\u00f3 a enriquecer el repertorio musical israel\u00ed con sus interpretaciones de canciones en yiddish y hebreo. En 2004, la ciudad de Tel Aviv le otorg\u00f3 el t\u00edtulo de \u00abQuerida de Tel Aviv\u00bb. En 2006, fue elegida presidenta del Consejo Mundial de Cultura Yiddish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lo largo de su vida, Nehama Lifshitz ha dedicado su trabajo a la preservaci\u00f3n y transmisi\u00f3n de la cultura yiddish, que los reg\u00edmenes totalitarios del siglo XX \u2014los de Adolf Hitler y Joseph Stalin\u2014 intentaron borrar por completo.
