I suoi genitori sono musicisti dilettanti e la madre conosce la tradizione dei canti ebraici provenzali. Dall&#8217;et\u00e0 di sette anni, Milhaud impara a suonare il violino ed a comporre. Nel 1909 entra al Conservatorio di Parigi dove studia armonia con Gustave Leroux, contrappunto con Andr\u00e9 G\u00e9dalge, composizione con l&#8217;organista Charles-Marie Widor ed orchestrazione con Paul Dukas. Qui scopre il folklore sudamericano ed i ritmi esotici che si esprimeranno nelle sue opere emblematiche, come <em>Saudades do Brazil<\/em> (1920-1921) e <em>Le b\u0153uf sur le toit<\/em> (1919). Tornato a Parigi, partecipa alla breve avventura del &#8220;Groupe des Six&#8221; (Francis Poulenc, Arthur Honegger, Germaine Tailleferre, Louis Durey, Georges Auric e Darius Milhaud) creato intorno a Jean Cocteau, soprattutto in reazione all&#8217;impressionismo ed al wagnerismo.<\/p>\n<p>Nel 1923, durante un soggiorno negli Stati Uniti, scopre il jazz, i cui ritmi vengono utilizzati per la composizione del balletto <em>La Cr\u00e9ation du monde<\/em> (1923).<\/p>\n<p>La sua produzione rimane abbondante fino allo scoppio della Seconda guerra mondiale, quando \u00e8 costretto a fuggire dalla Francia occupata, essendo stato inserito in due liste di proscrizione: come ebreo e come compositore di arte degenerata. Nel 1940 parte per gli Stati Uniti, dove il direttore d&#8217;orchestra Pierre Monteux lo aiuta a trovare un posto di professore di composizione al Mills College di Oakland (California). Tra gli studenti di Milhaud figurano il pianista jazz Dave Brubeck, il compositore di variet\u00e0 Burt Bacharach ed i fondatori del minimalismo americano Steve Reich e Philip Glass.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-112687 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Couv-Service-sacre-dirige-par-Milhaud-D33-30_7_VIG-289x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Couv-Service-sacre-dirige-par-Milhaud-D33-30_7_VIG-289x300.jpg 289w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Couv-Service-sacre-dirige-par-Milhaud-D33-30_7_VIG-768x798.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Couv-Service-sacre-dirige-par-Milhaud-D33-30_7_VIG-600x623.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Couv-Service-sacre-dirige-par-Milhaud-D33-30_7_VIG.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/>Nel 1947 torna in Francia e gli viene offerto un posto di professore di composizione al Conservatorio di Parigi. In seguito alterna la sua attivit\u00e0 musicale tra Parigi e gli Stati Uniti. La sua carriera viene coronata nel 1971 con la nomina all&#8217;Acad\u00e9mie des Beaux-Arts. Muore a Ginevra il 22 giugno 1974, all&#8217;et\u00e0 di 81 anni.<\/p>\n<p>Autore di un&#8217;opera prolifica (443 numeri d&#8217;opera!), Darius Milhaud ha coperto tutti i generi: opera, musica da camera, musica sinfonica, concerti, balletti e musica vocale. Il suo linguaggio musicale \u00e8 caratterizzato dalla politonalit\u00e0 e dalla poliritmia.
