{"id":116525,"date":"2025-01-08T12:20:05","date_gmt":"2025-01-08T11:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/chamber-works-by-robert-muller-hartmann-frederick-block\/"},"modified":"2025-01-08T16:40:06","modified_gmt":"2025-01-08T15:40:06","slug":"chamber-works-by-robert-muller-hartmann-frederick-block","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/it\/chamber-works-by-robert-muller-hartmann-frederick-block\/","title":{"rendered":"Chamber Works by Robert M\u00fcller-Hartmann &amp; Frederick Block"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>ARC Ensemble<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Chandos Records Ltd &#8211; Collection Music in Exile<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Il settimo e l&#8217;ottavo CD della serie Music in Exile, <em>Chamber Music by Robert M\u00fcller-Hartmann<\/em> e <em>Chamber Music by Frederick Block<\/em>, pubblicati da Chandos rispettivamente nel 2023 e nel 2024, ci fanno conoscere le opere ingiustamente dimenticate di questi due compositori ebrei, tedesco ed austriaco, emigrati in Inghilterra e negli Stati Uniti negli anni &#8217;30 per sfuggire al nazismo.<\/p>\n<p>Robert M\u00fcller-Hartmann (1884-1950) fa parte di una lunga lista di compositori ebrei europei emarginati e dimenticati dall&#8217;avvento del nazismo e dagli sconvolgimenti sociali che seguirono la Seconda guerra mondiale.<\/p>\n<p>Il destino di questo compositore, insegnante e musicologo \u00e8 ampiamente descritto nel libretto di questo disco ben documentato da <a href=\"https:\/\/promusicahebraica.org\/about-pro-musica-hebraica\/board-of-advisers\/simon-wynberg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simon Wynberg<\/a>, direttore dell&#8217;Ensemble ARC (Artists of The Royal Conservatory) con sede in Canada, fondato nel 2002.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-116486 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/robert-muller-hartmann_redim-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/robert-muller-hartmann_redim-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/robert-muller-hartmann_redim.jpg 286w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nato ad Amburgo l&#8217;11 ottobre 1884, <strong>Robert M\u00fcller-Hartmann<\/strong> era figlio del clarinettista ed insegnante di pianoforte Josef M\u00fcller e di sua moglie Jenny (nata Hartmann). Era il cugino del compositore e direttore d&#8217;orchestra Paul Dessau (1894-1979). Dal 1900 al 1904 studi\u00f2 composizione al Conservatorio Stern di Berlino con Eduard Behm, discepolo di Brahms, e contrappunto con il compositore e critico Max Loewengard. Nel 1912, M\u00fcller-Hartmann spos\u00f2 Rebecca Elisabeth Asch (1890-1981) &#8211; nota come Lisbeth &#8211; figlia di un&#8217;importante famiglia ebraica di Amburgo. Amburgo rimarr\u00e0 il centro della vita professionale e familiare del compositore. M\u00fcller-Hartmann insegn\u00f2 teoria musicale al Conservatorio Kr\u00fcss-F\u00e4rber ed al Conservatorio Bernuth e, dal 1923, armonia e composizione all&#8217;Universit\u00e0 di Amburgo. Inoltre, scrisse saggi e recensioni per diverse riviste musicali e fece parte del comitato consultivo musicale della Nordische Rundfunk Aktiengesellschaft (l&#8217;ente radiotelevisivo della Germania settentrionale).<\/p>\n<p>Diversi importanti direttori d&#8217;orchestra eseguirono le sue opere: Karl Muck, Carl Schuricht, Richard Strauss, che diresse la sua Ouverture sinfonica, op. 7, a Berlino nel 1917, ed Otto Klemperer, un ex studente del Conservatorio Stern, che esegu\u00ec in prima assoluta la sua Ouverture <em>Leonce und Lena<\/em>, op. 14. Le stazioni radio tedesche, in particolare la Nordische Rundfunk, trasmettevano regolarmente la musica di M\u00fcller-Hartmann.<\/p>\n<p>Licenziato dall&#8217;Universit\u00e0 di Amburgo nel 1933, insegn\u00f2 in una scuola ebraica per ragazze prima di fuggire in Inghilterra nel 1937. Si stabil\u00ec con la moglie ed i tre bambini a Dorking, a circa 25 miglia a sud di Londra. Attraverso la figlia, conobbe il compositore britannico Ralph Vaughan Williams, con il quale divenne amico e collabor\u00f2. Verso la fine dell&#8217;estate del 1940, M\u00fcller-Hartmann fu internato sull&#8217;Isola di Man come cittadino tedesco. Fu rilasciato poche settimane dopo grazie al sostegno di Vaughan Williams. Ma dovette aspettare altri tre anni prima che il Ministero degli Interni gli concedesse il permesso di insegnare ufficialmente musica. Durante la guerra, la BBC trasmise pochissime opere di compositori tedeschi oppure austriaci, anche se ebrei e rifugiati. L&#8217;antipatia generale nei confronti dei musicisti tedeschi in esilio e la personalit\u00e0 modesta e piuttosto autoironica di M\u00fcller-Hartmann fecero s\u00ec che egli venisse presto dimenticato, tanto pi\u00f9 quando mor\u00ec prematuramente per un&#8217;emorragia cerebrale il 15 dicembre 1950.<\/p>\n<p>Contro ogni aspettativa, tuttavia, la BBC trasmise una selezione di lieder di M\u00fcller-Hartmann nell&#8217;estate del 1945. In Israele, grazie alla promozione del figlio Jedidja, la sua Sonata per due violini, op. 32, e la sua Sinfonietta furono trasmesse su Kol Yerushalayim.<\/p>\n<p>Dopo la sua morte, i suoi manoscritti musicali furono inviati ai figli in Israele, che li donarono all&#8217;Accademia di Musica e Danza di Gerusalemme. Figlio unico di una famiglia benestante, Block aveva goduto del raro lusso di una vita musicale senza la necessit\u00e0 di un reddito indipendente. <\/p>\n<p>Il suo primo insegnante fu il compositore ceco Josef Bohuslav Foerster, seguito da Hans G\u00e1l all&#8217;Universit\u00e0 di Vienna. Di natura conservatrice, la musica di Block riscosse un modesto successo negli anni Venti. Il 15 gennaio 1922, a Vienna, un concerto interamente dedicato alla sua musica comprendeva un Quartetto per archi in la minore, un gruppo di Lieder ed un Quintetto per pianoforte in sol maggiore. Seguirono altre esecuzioni delle sue opere a Vienna ed a Praga. All&#8217;inizio degli anni Trenta, la musica di Block fu inserita in programmi che promuovevano la musica di giovani compositori austriaci. Molti di loro, come Karl Weigl, Erich Zeisl, Ernst Kanitz, Otto Jokl e Walter Bricht, erano ebrei e cercarono rifugio negli Stati Uniti. Negli anni Trenta, Block si dedic\u00f2 anche all&#8217;opera e, in un&#8217;esplosione di straordinaria energia, ne compose sei nell&#8217;arco di quattro anni. La terza, <em>Samum<\/em>, fu rappresentata per la prima volta nel gennaio 1936 al Teatro Nazionale Slovacco di Presburgo (oggi Bratislava) con grande successo.<\/p>\n<p>Mentre le forze tedesche si ammassavano sul confine austriaco ed il Paese mostrava il suo entusiasmo per l&#8217;unione con la Germania, Block dovette rendersi conto dell&#8217;imminente minaccia per gli ebrei austriaci. Nel marzo 1938, dopo l&#8217;annessione dell&#8217;Austria da parte di Hitler, Block ottenne un visto britannico a Trieste, poi vol\u00f2 da Zurigo a Londra dove incontr\u00f2 la sua fidanzata, Ina Margulies, che spos\u00f2 nella sinagoga del distretto di Richmond il 15 agosto 1939. I due vissero a Kew per gli ultimi mesi del loro soggiorno a Londra, dove Block complet\u00f2 l&#8217;opera <em>Schattenspiel<\/em> (Gioco di ombre). La partenza per l&#8217;America fu ritardata fino all&#8217;approvazione della loro domanda di immigrazione nel maggio successivo. L&#8217;11 giugno 1940 si imbarcarono sul Britannic, un transatlantico della Cunard-White Star Line, e lasciarono Liverpool per New York, dove arrivarono nell&#8217;estate del 1940.<\/p>\n<p>L\u00ec trov\u00f2 lavoro componendo ed arrangiando spartiti per orchestre radiofoniche &#8211; soprattutto della CBS &#8211; e arrangiando opere orchestrali da pubblicare in versione per pianoforte solo. Ma oltre a queste attivit\u00e0 che richiedono molto tempo, compose un&#8217;enorme quantit\u00e0 di musica da camera. Ipersensibile, stressato e perseguitato da premonizioni di morte imminente, Frederick Block lasciava a malapena il suo appartamento di Washington Heights. Il suo amico e collega Otto Janowitz scrisse: \u201cEra un compositore che non apparteneva a nessuna scuola o movimento, che non voleva dimostrare nulla con la sua composizione, che non era n\u00e9 astratto n\u00e9 romantico, ma che, con instancabile perseveranza, portava a termine un lavoro dopo l&#8217;altro senza preoccuparsi delle critiche o del successo, purtroppo nemmeno delle esecuzioni, seguendo semplicemente ed onestamente il suo desiderio di creare\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-116514 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/friedrich-block-music-score-262x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/friedrich-block-music-score-262x300.jpg 262w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/friedrich-block-music-score-600x688.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/friedrich-block-music-score.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/>Le premonizioni che lo perseguitavano erano quasi certamente determinate dallo stress della separazione: da Vienna, dalla sua lingua e dalla sua cultura, e dalla madre Berta, una vedova rimasta a Vienna, uccisa a Treblinka nel 1942.<\/p>\n<p>All&#8217;inizio del 1945 gli fu diagnosticato un cancro. Le radiazioni si rivelarono inefficaci ed il 1\u00b0 giugno, solo tre mesi prima del suo quarantaseiesimo compleanno (e della cittadinanza americana), Frederick Block mor\u00ec. Fu sepolto nel cimitero di Cedar Park, a Paramus, nel New Jersey. Ina Block non si rispos\u00f2 mai e sopravvisse al marito per cinquantacinque anni, scomparendo nel 2000. La sua tomba si trova accanto a quella di Frederick.<\/p>\n<p>Nel 2001, la New York Public Library ha acquisito gli <a href=\"https:\/\/archives.nypl.org\/mus\/20426\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">archivi de Frederick Block<\/a> dal patrimonio della vedova, Ina Block, e Simon Wynberg li ha scoperti per caso nelle collezioni della biblioteca. La storia di questo compositore, la bellezza delle sue opere ma anche il quasi totale anonimato che segu\u00ec la sua morte lo commossero.
