Sua nonna, Hermina Naschitz, che ha imparato a suonare il pianoforte con Franz Liszt, incoraggia i suoi figli e nipoti a studiare musica. Appassionato di arte e teatro, J\u00f3zsef Kozma mette in scena spettacoli con sua zia Julianna, pianista, e compone musica dall&#8217;et\u00e0 di 11 anni. Al liceo Francesco Giuseppe, il pi\u00f9 prestigioso istituto di Budapest, subisce frequenti vessazioni razziste, insulti e risse. In seguito, gli viene impedito di proseguire gli studi universitari in letteratura e filosofia a causa dell&#8217;introduzione di un numerus clausus che limita il numero di studenti ebrei. Si orienta quindi verso la musica e segue i corsi di composizione musicale di L\u00e9o Weiner (1885-1960) ed Albert Sikl\u00f3s (1878-1942) all&#8217;Accademia Nazionale di Musica di Budapest. Frequenta quindi il drammaturgo Bertold Brecht (1898-1956) ed il compositore Kurt Weill (1900-1950) <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_129215_1('footnote_plugin_reference_129215_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_129215_1('footnote_plugin_reference_129215_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_129215_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_129215_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Eisler e Weill, di origine ebraica, e Brecht, comunista, si rifugiarono negli Stati Uniti durante il periodo nazista.<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_129215_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_129215_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script>, entrambi impegnati nella diffusione della musica popolare, nonch\u00e9 la pianista Lilli Apel (1891-1975), che sposer\u00e0 ufficialmente nel 1939.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Nel 1933, i coniugi Kosma scappano dal nazismo e trovano rifugio in Francia. Stabilitisi a Parigi senza un soldo, Lilli d\u00e0 lezioni di pianoforte, mentre J\u00f3zsef accompagna corsi di danza. Nel 1935, nell&#8217;anticamera di un produttore cinematografico, incontra il poeta Jacques Pr\u00e9vert (1900-1977) al quale spiega che desidera scrivere canzoni. Gli d\u00e0 il suo indirizzo. Passano diversi mesi e, un giorno, Pr\u00e9vert gli porta due testi che Kosma si affretta a mettere in musica. Gli anni &#8217;30 sono anche l&#8217;occasione per Kosma di mettere in mostra il suo talento di folklorista<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_129215_1('footnote_plugin_reference_129215_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_129215_1('footnote_plugin_reference_129215_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_129215_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_129215_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Seguendo l&#8217;esempio di B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k, che all&#8217;inizio del XX secolo raccogle la musica popolare ungherese.<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_129215_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_129215_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script>. Nel 1932 compone una <em>Suite Exotique <\/em>di 14 brani per pianoforte, ispirati a temi africani, arabi e cinesi, pubblicata nel 1936 da Pro Musica, poi nel 1937 una <em>Suite Su\u00e9doise su vecchie canzoni popolari<\/em> (XV e XVI secolo), per pianoforte conduttore e vari strumenti, edita da Eschig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nel 1940, mentre l&#8217;esercito tedesco si sta avvicinando a Parigi, Pr\u00e9vert convince i suoi amici e collaboratori ungheresi (Kosma, Brassa\u00ef, Trauner) a lasciare la capitale per rifugiarsi nel sud. Dopo diverse soste provvisorie, Kosma e sua moglie trovano rifugio presso una famiglia di Navarrenx, nel B\u00e9arn. Per ringraziarli, Kosma compone <em>Les Esquisses B\u00e9arnaises: chants et danses des Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es<\/em>, una piccola suite per pianoforte in otto movimenti datata 1940, pubblicata dalle Editions Henn a Ginevra per evitare la sistematica spoliazione della SACEM nei confronti dei compositori ebrei in Francia.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-medium wp-image-128905\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/6.les-enfants-du-paradis-2e-epoque_redim-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-128905\" style=\"width:180px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/6.les-enfants-du-paradis-2e-epoque_redim-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/6.les-enfants-du-paradis-2e-epoque_redim.jpg 373w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Les enfants du paradis, 2a epoca<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Dopo Navarrenx, i coniugi Kosma soggiornano a Palavas-les-Flots, in uno chalet spartano dove soffrono il freddo. Senza nulla da fare, il compositore frequenta la biblioteca di Montpellier dove sceglie alcune canzoni popolari che arrangia per violino e pianoforte. Tre di esse vengono eseguite per la prima volta il 16 marzo 1941 a Palavas, durante un concerto di beneficenza a favore dei prigionieri di guerra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph Kosma ritrova Pr\u00e9vert a Tourrettes-sur-Loup, nelle Alpi Marittime, dove compone la colonna sonora di due dei film pi\u00f9 famosi di Marcel Carn\u00e9: <em>Les Visiteurs du soir<\/em> e <em>Les enfants du Paradis<\/em>. Non potendo firmarli in quanto ebreo, ricorre a prestanome come i pianisti e compositori Georges Mouqu\u00e9 (1901-1961) e Jean Marion (1912-1967). Dopo l&#8217;evacuazione della Costa Azzurra da parte degli italiani nel settembre 1943, Kosma si unisce alla resistenza di Thorenc nelle Alpi Marittime. Il 28 agosto 1944 viene ferito dall&#8217;esplosione di una mina sopra Vence. L&#8217;anno dopo, mette in musica 46 canzoni della raccolta di poesie <em>Paroles <\/em>di Pr\u00e9vert, che saranno pubblicate dalle \u00c9ditions Enoch nel 1946 e nel 1947. Le pi\u00f9 famose (<em>Les Feuilles mortes, Barbara, Je suis comme je suis, \u00c0 l&#8217;enterrement d&#8217;une feuille morte<\/em>\u2026) saranno cantate per vent&#8217;anni da interpreti rinomati come Mouloudji, i Fr\u00e8res Jacques, Yves Montand, Francis Lemarque, Germaine Montero, Juliette Gr\u00e9co, Cora Vaucaire, Catherine Sauvage\u2026 La ripresa nel 1949 negli Stati Uniti di <em>Feuilles mortes<\/em>, con il titolo <em>Autumn Leaves<\/em> con il testo di Johnny Mercer, la rende un classico che sar\u00e0 interpretato dai pi\u00f9 grandi nomi della canzone e del jazz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-medium wp-image-128917\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/8.Kosma-et-J-Greco_redim-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-128917\" style=\"width:340px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/8.Kosma-et-J-Greco_redim-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/8.Kosma-et-J-Greco_redim-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/8.Kosma-et-J-Greco_redim-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/8.Kosma-et-J-Greco_redim.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Kosma e J Greco<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Nell&#8217;ottobre 1948, Joseph Kosma ottiene la cittadinanza francese, un anno dopo aver incontrato Marie Merlin, la sua nuova compagna che per quasi un quarto di secolo lo assister\u00e0 nel suo lavoro e nelle sue battaglie. Nonostante la dolorosa separazione da Pr\u00e9vert nel 1951, gli anni &#8217;50 segnano per il compositore un periodo intenso di creazione con diverse canzoni famose su poesie di Sartre, Queneau, Aragon, Desnos, nonch\u00e9 altre opere da riscoprire, scritte su testi di Jean-Marie Croufer, Henri Bassis e Madeleine Riffaud, questi ultimi due ex resistenti comunisti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il successo delle melodie e delle colonne sonore di Kosma oscurer\u00e0, con suo grande rammarico, la sua produzione di musica sinfonica, in particolare di balletti come <em>Le Rendez-vous<\/em>, creato a Parigi nel 1945 su una coreografia di Roland Petit, o <em>L&#8217;\u00c9cuy\u00e8re <\/em>(1948), coreografato da Serge Lifar per Yvette Chauvir\u00e9. Compone anche due opere: <em>Les Canuts<\/em> (1959) e <em>Les Hussards<\/em> (1969).
