Dopo la dichiarazione dei diritti dell&#8217;Uomo, si stabilisce in Francia. Nel 1798 sposa Julie Mayer, ebrea della Lorena, che gli d\u00e0 un primo figlio: nasce cos\u00ec a Parigi il 27 maggio 1799 Jacques Fran\u00e7ois Fromental Elias L\u00e9vy. A seguito del decreto del 1808 che richiedeva agli ebrei di registrarsi allo stato civile, Elie L\u00e9vy cambia il suo nome in Hal\u00e9vy facendo riferimento, senza dubbio, al filosofo e musicista sefardita del XII secolo, Juda Hal\u00e9vi.<\/p>\n<p>Cullato dai canti della sinagoga, il giovane Fromental si dimostra molto presto particolarmente dotato per la musica. A dieci anni entra al Conservatorio di Parigi dove frequenta, a partire dai suoi dodici anni, la classe di Cherubini. A vent&#8217;anni vince il Gran Premio di Roma. A Vienna frequenta Beethoven ma la sua vera ammirazione \u00e8 pi\u00f9 per Mozart. Dopo un inizio difficile nel campo dell&#8217;arte lirica, diventa improvvisamente famoso nel 1835 con la sua opera La Juive, su libretto di Scribe. Il successo di quest&#8217;opera \u00e8 stato folgorante in Europa per quasi un secolo. \u00c8 stata tradotta in molte lingue ed eseguita numerose volte. Cade poi nell&#8217;oblio fino alla met\u00e0 del XX secolo.<\/p>\n<p>Nel 1840 Fromental Hal\u00e9vy \u00e8 nominato professore di composizione al Conservatorio di Parigi; annoverer\u00e0 tra i suoi allievi Gounod, Bizet e Saint-Sa\u00ebns. Tentato un momento dalla politica, si candida all&#8217;Assemblea Nazionale, ma senza successo. Membro <em>dell&#8217;Acad\u00e9mie des Beaux-Arts<\/em> dal 1836, \u00e8 nominato segretario perpetuo nel 1854. Nonostante questa totale integrazione nella vita politica e culturale francese, Hal\u00e9vy continua a collaborare alle attivit\u00e0 della comunit\u00e0 ebraica, prendendo tuttavia le sue distanze da un&#8217;ortodossia troppo rigorosa.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c8 cos\u00ec che ha scritto alcune musiche vocali per la sinagoga, tra le quali <em>Vayehi binsoa<\/em>, un brano solenne che accompagna l&#8217;uscita della Torah dal tabernacolo, il salmo 100<em> Mizmor lessodo<\/em>, il salmo 115 cantato durante le funzioni di <em>Pasqua, Shavuot e Sukkot<\/em> ed il salmo 118 <em>Min hametsar<\/em> che chiude l&#8217;Hallel. Quest&#8217;ultimo brano per 7 voci fu eseguito per il matrimonio di suo nipote, Edgar Rodrigues con Louise Mayer, il 2 maggio 1858; \u00e8 anche stato cantato all&#8217;inaugurazione del <em>Temple de la Victoire<\/em> il 9 settembre 1874.<\/p>\n<p>Hal\u00e9vy \u00e8 anche l&#8217;autore di una versione musicale del salmo 130 <em>Mimaamakim<\/em>, ben noto nella sua versione latina con il titolo di <em>De profundis<\/em> (Dalle profondit\u00e0 dell&#8217;abisso ti ho chiamato, Signore).
