Tra il 1915 e il 1920, studia composizione al Conservatorio di Kiev con <strong>Boleslav Yavorski<\/strong>, e dal 1922 con <strong>Maksimilyan Steynberg<\/strong>. Allo stesso tempo, insegna musica in diverse scuole ebraiche tra il 1916 e il 1922, e dirige il coro della Societ\u00e0 di Musica Ebraica di Kiev.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright  wp-image-27382\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/beregovski.jpg\" alt=\"beregovski.jpg\" width=\"171\" height=\"258\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/beregovski.jpg 229w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/beregovski-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 171px) 100vw, 171px\" \/>Nel 1917 viene assunto per analizzare e catalogare le registrazioni sonore della seconda spedizione etnografica di Shalom An-ski. Nel 1919 fonda e dirige il ramo musicale della <em>Jewish Kultur-Lige<\/em> (un gruppo di organizzazioni culturali e sociali per la promozione della cultura yiddish) a Kiev, fino alla sua chiusura nel 1921.<\/p>\n<p>Secondo l&#8217;Enciclopedia Judaica ed il sito web <a href=\"https:\/\/yivoencyclopedia.org\/article.aspx\/Beregovskii_Moisei_Iakovlevich\">YIVO<\/a>, Beregovski dirige il gabinetto di musica folclorica ebraica nella sezione etnografica dell&#8217;Istituto di cultura ebraica proletaria di Kiev tra il 1930 ed il 1948. Questa affermazione \u00e8 per\u00f2 messa in dubbio dal musicologo <strong>Joachim Braun<\/strong> nel suo libro <em>Jews and Jewish Elements in Soviet Music<\/em> (1978). (YIVO)<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft  wp-image-27378\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p_1235_003_280px_vertic.jpg\" alt=\"p_1235_003_280px_vertic.jpg\" width=\"211\" height=\"314\" align=\"left\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In ogni caso, nel 1946, Beregovski ha una collezione di quasi 7.000 documenti etnografici, inclusi sia dei manoscritti e registrazioni fatte dal Kultur-Lige, <strong>An-ski<\/strong>, <strong>Engel<\/strong> e <strong>Kisselgof<\/strong>, che delle sue registrazioni sul terreno (ci saranno pi\u00f9 di 2.000 registrazioni su 700 cilindri di cera durante le sue spedizioni a Kiev, Odessa, Nikolaev, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozh&#8217;e, e Vinnitsa, cos\u00ec come in Galizia).<\/p>\n<p>Nel 1949, il dipartimento di cultura ebraica \u00e8 chiuso, Beregovski \u00e8 arrestato ed inviato a Tayshet, il centro amministrativo del Gulag, dove rimarr\u00e0 dal 1951 al 1955.<\/p>\n<p>Nel 1956, viene &#8220;riabilitato&#8221; e ritorna a Kiev dove muore il 12 agosto 1961.<\/p>\n<p>Tra gli anni &#8217;30 e &#8217;50, Beregovski ha intrappreso la pubblicazione di un&#8217;antologia in cinque volumi della musica folklorica ebraica, basata sulle sue registrazioni sul terreno.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright  wp-image-27380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p_1235_002_500_px.jpg\" alt=\"p_1235_002_500_px.jpg\" width=\"204\" height=\"292\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p_1235_002_500_px.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.iemj.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/p_1235_002_500_px-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/>Il primo volume, Canti dei lavoratori e dei rivoluzionari ebrei, \u00e8 pubblicato nel 1934; il secondo volume, <em>Canti folklorici ebraici<\/em>, \u00e8 terminato nel 1938 ma non \u00e8 mai stato pubblicato. (Tracce di questo lavoro sono state trovate allo YIVO di New York nel 1981). Questo volume include una lunga introduzione di Beregovski, in cui afferma, tra l&#8217;altro, che &#8220;non esiste un&#8217;unica musica folklorica ebraica uniforme in termini di contenuto, tema od espressione&#8221;; Il terzo volume, <em>Musica Folklorica Ebraica Strumentale<\/em> \u00e8 stato pubblicato per la prima volta in una versione alleggerita nel 1987 da Max Goldin, e ripubblicato in inglese nel 2001 da Max Slobin; il quarto volume riguarda le melodie ebraiche senza parole, o niggunim [1999]; il quinto volume tratta di spettacoli teatrali ebraici e di pourim-shpils [versione incompleta, 2001].<\/p>\n<p>In contrasto con le teorie di <strong>Abraham Zvi Idelsohn<\/strong> e <strong>Lazarus Saminsky<\/strong>, alla ricerca di una musica ebraica originale, Beregovski sostiene l&#8217;idea che gli &#8220;elementi presi in prestito&#8221; dalle culture circostanti della diaspora vengono trasformati ed incorporati nel folklore ebraico di propria iniziativa, non a suo svantaggio. Secondo lui, l&#8217;incorporazione di &#8220;elementi presi in prestito&#8221; non deve essere vista come aggiuntivi estranei, esogeni, ma piuttosto come un&#8217;evoluzione naturale che attesta la facolt\u00e0 d\u2019adattamento e di sviluppo della musica ebraica.<\/p>\n<p>I contributi di Beregovski sono, a tutt&#8217;oggi, una tappa indispensabile per qualsiasi ricerca sulle tradizioni
