Da ragazzo canta nei cori della sua sinagoga e inizia a studiare violino all&#8217;et\u00e0 di 6 anni. Coglier\u00e0 anche l&#8217;occasione per imparare altri strumenti.<\/p>\n<p>Musicista esperto, suona nell&#8217;orchestra dell&#8217;Opera di Odessa e partecipa a delle tourn\u00e9es attraverso la Russia e la Siberia. Successivamente, diventa il maestro del coro di una compagnia d\u2019operetta russa. Durante il servizio militare, che compie come direttore d\u2019orchestra del suo reggimento, viaggia fino a Kharbin, in Manciuria e nel nord-est della Cina, dove incontra una compagnia teatrale yiddish il cui direttore d&#8217;orchestra \u00e8 Peretz Sandler. Quando quest&#8217;ultimo emigra negli Stati Uniti, Olshanetsky lo sostituisce a Kharbin. Inizia allora a scrivere canzoni yiddish e la musica per l&#8217;opera teatrale di Yitzhak Kaplan, Tsurik aheym kayn tsien (Il ritorno a Sion).<\/p>\n<p>Dopo aver viaggiato attraverso la Siberia, il Giappone, la Cina e l&#8217;India con una nuova compagnia d\u2019operetta russa, torna a Kharbin nel 1921, dove scopre che tutti i teatri yiddish sono partiti.<\/p>\n<p>Nel 1922 emigra negli Stati Uniti, dove si era gi\u00e0 stabilito suo zio Hyman Meisel. Meisel in seguito diventa suo suocero, quando sposa sua cugina, la cantante e attrice yiddish Bella Meisel (Mysell), che in seguito si risposer\u00e0 con Herman Yablokoff. E\u2019 allora che inizia ad interessarsi all&#8217;Arte del Teatro Yiddish. Qualche tempo dopo parte per Cuba per assumere la direzione di una compagnia teatrale. Tornato a New York, lavora successivamente per due teatri yiddish (il &#8220;Lenox&#8221; a Harlem ed il &#8220;Liberty&#8221; a Brooklyn) prima di essere &#8220;promosso&#8221; al Teatro Nazionale, il prestigioso teatro del centro-citt\u00e0. Poi, nel 1929, dopo aver scritto diverse operette di successo, riscrive parte della musica dell&#8217;opera classica di Goldfaden, Bar khokhba, al momento del suo debutto radiofonico.<\/p>\n<p>Dal 1925, e fino alla sua morte, il nome di Olshanetsky diventa onnipresente sulla Second Avenue e le sue operette sono rappresentate in quasi tutti i principali teatri. Diventa poi il primo direttore musicale dell&#8217;Hotel Concord. Alcuni dei pi\u00f9 rinomati cantori dell&#8217;epoca lo consideravano di gran lunga il miglior maestro di coro grazie alla sua comprensione della sensibilit\u00e0 del linguaggio cantoriale e la sua libert\u00e0 ritmica. Scrive anche alcune opere liturgiche, la maggior parte delle quali non sono mai state pubblicate.<\/p>\n<p>Olshanetsky aveva un dono speciale per scrivere linee melodiche eleganti con un senso drammatico molto sviluppato. \u00c8 stato in grado di combinare questi elementi e fare musica per il grande pubblico. Joseph Rumshinsky, suo collega pi\u00f9 anziano, ma anche suo rivale, scrive nelle sue Memorie che Olshanetsky comprendeva intuitivamente i desideri musicali degli immigrati ebrei e che ha portato al teatro yiddish sia &#8220;romanzi onirici&#8221; che un linguaggio di tipo &#8220;zingaro russo&#8221;.
