French music before and after the Great War

This CD gathers the Symphony in C minor by Fernand Halphen (Première mondiale) and the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand by Maurice Ravel, interpreted by the Orchestra of the Campus of Orsay, under the direction of Martin Barral, and with the pianist Olivier Herbay

Description

The First World War had a profound impact in Europe and musical creation did not escape this upheaval. Interpreted by the Orchestra of the Campus of Orsay, under the direction of Martin Barral, and with the pianist Olivier Herbay, the two works presented on this record bear witness to the diversity of musical languages and to the profusion of styles. The Symphony in C minor by Fernand Halphen still belongs to the 19th century, while the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand by Maurice Ravel is resolutely turned toward modernity. Bringing together these two works thus enables us to reveal several facets of musical life, not restricting it to exceptional composers, and allows us to better evaluate the diversity of French musical production before and after the war of 1914-1918.
