The encounter of judeo-spanish monodies with bulgarian polyphonies

Physical album out of stock, but downloadable album still available

Descripción

Drawing from their experience in Bulgarian singing, The Balkanes Quartet, accompanied by David Bruley (percussion) and Edmond Ghrenassia (clarinet), create a polyphonic repertoire based on traditional Judeo-Spanish songs, on which they integrated traditional Bulgarian songs showing similar modes and thematic topics. Thus, for example, a Sephardic song that depicts a dialogue between a mother and her daughter (Hija mia), the mother beseeching her daughter unlucky in love not to throw herself into the sea, responds to a Bulgarian song in which a young women begs her mother not to marry her too soon (Molih ta)… This interaction between the two musical cultures ‒ Sephardic and Bulgarian ‒ gives a renewed vision of the Judeo-Spanish singing.
