Music from Yiddish theaters and cabarets, 1st part

An overview of the many cultural and musical Yiddish activities in Paris from the beginning of the 19th century

There was a strong cultural and musical activity in Paris in the beginning of the 19th century. Many shows were played in Yiddish theaters like the Théâtre de la République, and in cabarets such as La Riviera or the Cabaret Dancing where artists like Bernard Potock and Dave Cash performed regularly.

For a few decades, comedians, actors, musicians performed in these often ephemeral entertainment places, attracting mainly a Yiddish-speaking audience.

Singers performed folkloric or mocking songs. They went from table to table and encouraged the audience to laugh, sing and dance, spreading the spirit of Yiddish songs.
