Three centuries ago – Polina Shepherd

Solo album featuring original compositions by Polina Shepherd

Originary from Kazan in Tatarstan, Polina Shepherd was part of the forerunners of the Yiddish music revival in Soviet Union since the 1990’s. She lived today in Great Britain, and continues an international career  of Russian and Yiddish singer and choirmaster. She wrote many tunes for the theatre, for choir and soloists, and accompanies herself on the piano.

This album show once again the inventivity and virtuosity of this prolific artist, who takes us with her powerful and yet fragile voice into the steppes of Russia. Polina Shepherd is accompanied by the clarinetist Merlin Shepherd, whose emotional power and traditional klezmer style are renowned worldwide, and by Rohan Kriwaczek on bagpipes.

We won’t be surprised to hear a little free jazz, or classical chants in the Chasidic rhythms and enchanting melodies.
