Ashkenazi liturgical music in France

Lectures filmed on October 21, 2024 at the INALCO Auditorium

As part of the Colloque Ashkenazi music in France, at concerts or in synagogue, October 20 & 21, 2024

This 2nd day of the Colloque was devoted to Ashkenazi liturgical music.

In the morning, musicologists Alexandre Cerveux, Gérard Ganvert and Hervé Roten presented an historical overview of the French Ashkenazi rite, from its origins to the present day. Secondly, Chana Englard and Judit Frigyesi Niran presented their research on the Alsatian rite and the use of nusah (a system governing the chanted recitation of prayers) in the rite of Eastern European Jews.

In the afternoon, two round tables were held, featuring Jonathan Blum (Alsatian Consistorial Rite), Emmanuel Chaze (Paris Consistorial Rite), François Garaï (Liberal Rite), Haïm Nisenbaum (Habad Hasidic Rite), Alexandre Cerveux (CJL), Bruno Fraitag (JEM Copernic), Hector Sabo (choirmaster in Strasbourg) and Emmanuelle Souffan (organist and choirmaster at the Parisian Victoire synagogue) presented the music of the different streams of the French Ashkenazi rite and debated its future.
