The sacred music of the world

A radio program of the European Institute of Jewish Music, hosted by Hervé Roten par Hervé Roten

MUSIQUES JUIVES D’HIER ET D’AUJOURD’HUI – TUESDAY JULY 5, 2016, JUDAÏQUES FM (94.8), 21H05. Radio program in French

Just like there is no society without beliefs, there is no society without music. Since the emergance of human societies, the music was associated to ritual practices. Simply accompaniying prayers, or central element of the cult, sacred music show many sides that haven’t been studied in an encyclopedic and comprative way, until now.

Gérard Kurdjian presents his book, the le_grand_livre_des_musiques_sacrees_siteiemj.jpg Great book of sacred music. Published in May 2016, the author leads us to the discovery of sacred music in Christianism, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Animism, with developments of sacred music into today’s music, contemporary, jazz, world music…

During this 50 minute program, we will go back through time and space to dive in the dense (dance) atmosphear of Animist and Shamanist music. The Hinduist and Buddhist music will help us remember forgotten harmonies. Finally, we will speak of the three main monotheist religions – Judaism, Christianism and Islam – who express themselves through their music

This immersion in the sacred will be illustrated with many sound examples, commented by Gérard Kurkdjian.
