The Matrouz by Simon Elbaz

A radio broadcast of the European Institute of Jewish Music, hosted by Hervé Roten

MUSIQUES JUIVES D’HIER ET D’AUJOURD’HUI – TUESDAY JANUARY 14, 2014, JUDAÏQUES FM (94.8), 21H05. Radio program in French

Coming from an Arabic word evoking the art of embroidery, the Matrouz is a traditional process that consists in inserting in Hebrew poetry stanzas in Arabic. In North African countries, the Matrouz was often said aloud or sung in the Jewish communities.

Native of Morocco, Simon Elbaz, author, comedian, composer and singer, renews the Matrouz repertoire, by intertwining languages (Hebrew, Arabic, French, Latin, Judeo-Spanish…) and genres (music, songs and theatre). Taking his inspiration in the poetic and musical tradition of Christian, Muslim and Jewish Andalusia, a creates a new kind of show, attached to tradition, but clearly opened to the future.

During this radio broadcast, Simon Elbaz will make us discover several compositions of the Matrouz.
A musical journey in the land of the one thousand and one voices…
