Maayan – De l’Andalousie à l’Orient… Le chant des femmes sépharades

The European Institute of Jewish Music is happy to present a demo CD of the band Maayan, founded by Naïma Chemoul.

Maayan means “sources” in Hebrew. In this CD, the singer Naïma Chemoul explores her origins, those of Sefardi women.  She pays tribute to their heritage and tells their story. She makes hear their voices.

Samir Hammouch on the kanun, and Bonaventure Akoto on the percussions, share their knowledge of Arab-Andalusian and Eastern music, their talent and sensibility for the women’s singing.

Together, they explore the various styles and musical modes, from written music to improvisation. They claim their tofay’s freedom as artists, between East and West, tradition and modernity and perfom a music which knows no limit in time or space !
