The Hélène Engel Collection

Hélène Engel is a singer, musicologist, author, composer and arranger. She is interested in all aspects of Jewish music, from the collecting of historical sounds to today’s compositions.

Hélène Engel, who has been living in Montreal for many years since 2007, hosts the radio show “The hidden faces of Jewish music” on Radio SHALOM Montreal, and since 2017, the program “La culture juive enchantée” on Radio CJRS Montreal, in which she invites us to discover the different artists of the Jewish musical scene.

During one of her visits to France, she deposited at the European Institute for Jewish Music almost all her radio broadcasts, over 220 audio files of a format of about fifty minutes each, as well as magnetic tapes concerning the artists Danielle Messia and Ben Zimet, and some of her own productions.

These archives are now available for consultation on our online catalog (browse the Hélène Engel Collection) or by making an appointment with the European Institute of Jewish Music (contact@iemj.org)
