The representation of the Jewish mother in Yiddish song

A radio program from the French Center of Jewish Music, hosted by Hervé Roten

MUSIQUES JUIVES D’HIER ET D’AUJOURD’HUI – TUESDAY FEBRUARY 14, 2012, JUDAIQUE FM (94.8), 21h05. Radio program in French

The Jewish mother is an omnipresent character in the Jewish imagination and its different forms of cultural expressions. That’s why we decided to dedicate a series of programs to it.
The first part of this series will be dedicated to the Jewish mother in the Yiddish song, omnipresent, stifling but also a loving mother.

Yitshok Niborski, Associate Professor at INALCO, Vice-President of the Maison de la Culture Yiddish-Bibliothèque Medem, and Patrick Berman, Secretary General of the French Center for Jewish Music, will be on the set to comment with humor on the many songs that deal with this theme (A yiddishe mame, A brivele der mame, Oyfn veg shteyt a boym, Kartofl-zup mit shvamen, Viglid, Mamenyu mayne, mamenyu kroyn, Momele…).

Listen to the second program dedicated to “The representation of the Jewish mother in the Judeo-Spanish song”
Listen to the third program dedicated to “The representation of the Jewish mother in the Judeo-Arabic song”
