RELEASE OF THE 8th CD FROM THE “CLASSICAL MUSIC” COLLECTION

Magnificently performed by Sarah Iancu, principal cellist of the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, and the virtuoso pianist David Bismuth, this third volume of *Mélodies hébraïques* features 28 instrumental pieces inspired by liturgical music, Judeo-Spanish songs, and stage music, particularly from Yiddish theater.

The opportunity to hear or rediscover works by Maurice Ravel (“Chanson hébraïque”), Louis Aubert (“Trois chants hébraïques”), Joseph Joachim (“Hebrew Melodies”), Joachim Stutschewsky (“Kaddish,” “Oriental Melody”), Paul Ben-Haim (“Berceuse Sfaradite”), Alberto Hemsi (Seconda Suite Sefardie), Léon Algazi (Le « Rébé » danse), Alexander Olshanetsky (Glik, Mayn shtetele Beltz) and Herman Yablokoff (Papirosn).

Part of this album also highlights the creative effervescence of Paris at the turn of the 20th century, in the music salons where the cream of the intellectual and artistic world of the time gathered. These salons—a number of which were hosted by Jewish patrons such as Camondo, Cahen d’Anvers, Deutsch de la Meurthe, Rothschild and Halphen—contributed significantly to the golden age of French music.

Finally, as a tribute to two women with tragic fates, this CD features two melodies by Ilse Weber composed in Terezin, as well as the magnificent poem “Eli Eli” by resistance fighter Hannah Szenes, set to music by David Zehavi.
