Comptines du jardin d’Eden

Collecting: Nathalie Soussana. Musical direction: Paul Mindy and Jean-Christophe Hoarau

A beautiful book-disc, published in 2005 by Editions Didier Jeunesse, gathering childrens’ songs and lullabies in Hebrew, Arabic, Yiddish, and Judeo-Spanish, now available for consultation at the EIJM.

Here are 28 Jewish nursery rhymes and lullabies in Arabic, Aramaic, Hebrew, Ladino and Yiddish. A daring and successful bet, result of a collection in the Paris region with grandparents and parents delivering with emotion the living treasures of their memory!

This book-disc from the collection “The rhymes of the world” allows the discovery or rediscovery of the particularly rich Jewish musical heritage. During the collection, Nathalie Soussana endeavored to report on the very deep connection to the languages and traditions that underlie Jewish identity, a plural identity. The repertoire of childhood goes beyond communitarianism, it touches the universal and the poetry. Beatrice Alemagna lends her delicate brushes to this book, offering paintings of great sensitivity.

The richness of the CD is breathtaking: we go from flamenco to rai, Gypsy guitars to Yemeni voice modulations, Yiddish lullabies to the rhythm of klezmer music, in a whirlwind alternately happy, unbridled, tender or poignant. The emotion is never far away. Among the performers and musicians are Awena Burgess, Norig Search, Muriel Hirschman, Isabelle Marx, Yannick Thépault, Jason Meyer, Khadija El Afrit

All rhymes are transcribed, translated and commented. A very big book-disc!
