Chanukah in Song and Story

Discover in our collections two two small format 78 RPM discs (17 cm) from the 1950’s, published by New York music label Reena Record Corporation, with Chanukah songs and prayers performed by Seymour Silbermintz on piano and vocals, and an explanation of the holiday by Albert H. Arkus.

The first disc comprises the two prayers of Chanukah recited before lighting the candles, the prayer Hanerot Halalu and the famous song Maoz Tzur sung after the lighting.

The second disc includes several Chanukah tunes, in particular a song about doughnuts Kemach, kemach, one about the spinning top S’Veevon (or Sevivon sov sov sov) and the prayer Al hanissim recited during Chanukah in the benediction of hoda’a (« recognition [of the divine majesty] ») of the ’Amida (the main prayer of morning, afternoon and evening services) and during the Birkat Hamazon (prayer after the meals).
