Se réinventer au présent : musical history of the Judeo-Spanish diaspora of France

A radio program by the European Institute for Jewish Music hosted by Hervé Roten

MUSIQUES JUIVES D’HIER ET D’AUJOURD’HUI - MARDI 3 JUILLET 2018, JUDAÏQUES FM (94.8), 21H00

After several years of musical research as part of her PhD, the anthropologist and ethnomusicologist Jessica Roda, who just published a book Se réinventer au présent - The Judeo-Spanish people of France. Family, community and musical heritage, give us a deep study on the construction of the Judeo-Spanish identity in France.

In this broadcast, Jessica Roda will analyse in particular in which way Judeo-Spanish music established itself in France through the association world before getting on stage. She will show the existence of interactions between the Judeo-Spanish musical scene - sometimes embodied by artists who don’t belong to this tradition - the public institutions and Judeo-Spanish communities who call upon these artists, and the families in which this heritage perpetuate, and adapting it to its new usage (the musical stage) and its new function (identity assertion).

This broadcast will also highlight the phenomena of patrimonialization of the Judeo-Spanish repertoire that aims to establish a direct filiation between Medieval Spain before the expulsion and today’s Sefardi Jews.

A deep dive into the musical history of the Judeo-Spanish diaspora of France, illustrated with many musical examples…
