Shalom Berlinski – The voice of fervor

From the Shtetl to the Synagogue de la Victoire (Paris)

MUSICAL HERITAGE OF THE JEWS FROM FRANCE COLLECTION, Vol 3

This double CD pack, 3rd volume in the collection Musical Heritage of the Jews from France, published by the Foundation of French Judaism together creates a rare anthology. It gathers recordings of Shalom Berlinski in 1972, with the Colonne Orchestra led by Jean-Paul Kreder and a mixed choir of 32 singers from Radio France; the organ and piano were played by Jean Bonfils. All the music has been digitalized and restored.

The voice of Shalom Berlinski, at the top of his art, is as comfortable with the great melodies of Western European Ashkenazi liturgy, as with the Hassidic melodies that come from Eastern Europe.

Shalom Berlinski, born in Poland, was the cantor of the biggest synagogue in France, rue de la Victoire in Paris, between 1948 and 1979. Present at every official or liturgical ceremony, he was the epitomy of the voice of French Ashkenazi Judaism for more than 30 years. During his long career, Shalom Berlinski became close to the greatest composers, such as Henry Barraud, Jean Wiener, Darius Milhaud, and cantors like Jan Peerce and Moshé Koussevitski. But behind this public person, there is man who unveils, and reveals himself, as the last witness of a bygone period in which small stories and big history sit together to create French Judaism, born from the Enlightment period and willing to integrate itself with modern values.
