Adolphe Attia, 50 years of Chazanut in France

Born in 1937 in M’Sila (Algeria), Adolphe Attia talks in this video about his childhood in Nice, his studies at the Séminaire israélite de France and his discovery of French Ashkenazi liturgy.

Appointed second officiating minister of the Grande Synagogue de la Victoire in 1961, then first officiating minister in 1979, Adolphe Attia led services at France’s most prestigious Ashkenazi synagogue for over 50 years.

Endowed with a fine tenor voice, he performed for several decades on the radio – notably on Léon Algazi ‘s program Kol Israël [The Voice of Israel] – and gave numerous concerts, both in France and abroad.
